1 Peter 2:1-3
Intro:
Review 1 Peter 1:19-23
1. We are going to focus on 2 key thoughts
I. Putting Away, Once for all
A. THEREFORE’ – 1:23; Since we are To be HOLY
[2:1] ‘THEREFORE’, putting aside — all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander,
‘PUTTING AWAY’ –
“To put away once for all —all sin that may be in our lives.”
B. God has commanded us to separate ourselves from sin
1. This must be a ‘ONCE FOR ALL ACTION’
“The tense of this phrase ‘putting aside’ indicates A complete about-face; A true once for all, ‘TURNING AWAY FROM SIN’
C. Since God has imparted to us the DIVINE LIFE;
1. We CANNOT TOY around with SIN
D. We must make a CLEAR DECISION—ONCE FOR ALL —
1. To RID IT FROM OUR LIVES
Because if we never come to that final resolution, well always struggle with that particular bondage— whatever it is, it will always be our master, and well always be its slave!
Ephesians 4:22-24
22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
E. Strip off the OLD NATURE and ONCE FOR ALL-
1. PUT ON the NEW nature
G. Paul said in Romans –
Romans 6:12, 16
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts …16 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?
H. That’s why PETER says:
“I’m settling it ONCE FOR ALL!
I’ve had it with these VICES CONTROLLING my MIND, LIFE and time, EMOTIONS!!!!
They are DESTROYING ME and I’M SETTLING IT TODAY!”
As I meditated on this, the FEAR OF GOD CAME OVER ME
God is serious about SIN!! And so must we!!!!!
ILLUSTRATION:
1. One of the BIGGEST VICES / non-glorifying God / BAD HABITS I had was
A. CHEWING TOBACCO
B. It was a HUGE VICE that CONTROLLED:
My MIND & DICTATED my MOODS
2. It was NOT UNTIL I FINALLY did what Peter says here and:
SETTLED IT WITH GOD——-ONCE FOR ALL! I’M DONE WITH IT! I’D RATHER DIE THAN TAKE 1 MORE PINCH OF CHEW!!! I’M TIRED OF BEING A SLAVE TO TOBACCO!
3. I STOOD on the PROMISES of ROMANS 6, and THAT WAS IT!
4. The LORD TOOK IT!
1. It was a HUGE BATTLE getting over it
2. But in SETTLING IT ONCE FOR ALL, it was OVER!
“It was very common just before a believer would be baptized, he would publicly confess his vices that he was renouncing in following Jesus.”
“These are MY VICES that I am GIVING UP to FOLLOW CHRIST!”
I. Peter then goes on to list 5 specific sins –
#1. MALICE
“This word basically means wickedness, badness in quality, an evil mindset, and works itself out in the shrewd and deceitful calculation of doing harm, ill-will or a desire to injure another. This encompasses both thoughts (i.e., desiring someone else’s harm) and actions (i.e., the actual harming of another).
Sin of commission , or omission
This sin really has to do with the HEART; all the hidden stuff nobody else can see…hatred, unforgiveness, rebellion, pride
#2. ALL—-DECEIT
This is a general term for ‘sin’ and suggests the deliberate use of guile or treachery in order to mislead someone.
“To catch with bait”. A violation of allegiance, confidence or treason. To betray another.
Pretend to be a friend, then when you get the goods on them, you betray them.
#3. HYPOCRISY —- all forms / plural noun
Peter uses a plural noun to indicate that every act of hiding of ones’ evil intentions toward another behind a mask of piety is wrong and thus should be avoided.
#4. ENVY
This term presents those feelings of ill will or jealousy that an individual harbors against someone else because of a real or perceived advantage that that person has acquired.
Lifestyle, marriage, ministry, family…etc…
Envy promotes JEALOUSY
#5. ALL—SLANDER (evil speaking)
Words which are designed to ruin an individual’s reputation or position.
1 Peter 1:17—god alone is judge
(#1. Put away Sin – Once for all)
Maybe none of your struggles? Maybe you hate, can’t forgive?
II. So that we mature spiritually (V. 2-3)
2 like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation,
‘Newborn Babies’— just born
“Is used in a metaphorical sense to describe a nursing baby”
A. As a newborn baby we are to LONG FOR the WORD of God
1. It almost seems like what Peter is speaking of is
a. GETTING back to our 1st love
2. Our 1ST LOVE for the WORD of GOD
‘To long for’
“Speaks of a GREAT CRAVING, or to Greatly Desire”
‘PURE / SINCERE’
“Without guile, unadulterated, nothing added to it. And is used metaphorically of the teaching of the Word of God.”
B. As New Born Christians –
We are to CRAVE the PURE TEACHING of the Word of God
‘MILK’
The word ‘MILK’ here refers to the Word of God in General.
C. Several other passages of Scripture refer to ‘MILK’ as
1. “The rudimentary spiritual teachings”
Hebrews 5:12-14
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant.
14 But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.
1 Corinthians 3:2
I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able,
D. These passages refer to ‘Milk’ as ‘Spiritual Fundamentals’
1. But ‘MILK’ in 1 Peter 2:2,
The word is used for the Word of God in general
‘So that’ v2
“The reason I long for the PURE MILK of God’s word is for Spiritual GROWTH. I desire to GROW SPIRITUALLY. I want to GROW into MATURITY”
‘By it’
“It’s only THRU FEASTING on the WORD that we GROW”
How do we develop an appetite for the Word? By putting away sin, once for all!
If you say, “I don’t really CRAVE Gods word, how do you develop an Appetite?
By putting away, once for all, SIN!!!!
It’s not natural to desire the Word, but here God shows us how to develop an APPETITE!
‘YOU’
“Growth is a PERSONAL MATTER; we grow individually”
E. Peter is teaching us that:
#1. We must each INDIVIDUALLY decide to
a. ONCE FOR ALL – rid our lives of SIN
#2. CRAVE and FEED on GOD’S WORD
F. We are each personally responsible for our own
1. SPIRITUAL GROWTH
G. Sin KILLS our APPETITE for the WORD of God
1. That’s why Peter said we MUST:
FIRST:
ONCE FOR ALL……..PUT AWAY SIN
THEN:
Like newborn babies, we can long for the PURE MILK of the Word
Always in that order!!!!
Away with sin, fill up on the Word
“If the only way to grow spiritually, is by feasting on the Word of God; and sin kills our spiritual appetite; then it would stand to reason that Christians who never ‘put aside all sin’, will never fully mature.”
“If we determine to live a HOLY life, then we will develop an APPETITE for the Word of God and by it we will grow into full maturity.”
But…
“If we allow sin to remain in our lives, we will lose our appetite for the Word of God which will cause us to seek fulfillment in other areas of life: Entertainment, pleasure, money, career, anything to try to fill that void. But the end result will be a LOST LIFE of SPIRITUAL IMMATURITY.”
It’s interesting, if we CRAVE the Word of God like a NEWBORN baby, we will grow up into spiritual maturity.
But, if we don’t crave the Word of God like a newborn baby, we will always remain a spiritual infant.
“Sin will keep me from this book, or this book will keep me from Sin”
QUESTION:
1. What is a sign of a HEALTHY baby?
a. One with an APPETITE
2. So what marks a HEALTHY CHRISTIAN?
a. One with an appetite for the WORD
The GREATER our CRAVING for the WORD, the GREATER our SPIRITUAL HEALTH
[3] if (since) you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.
A. Peter is probably making reference to —
Psalms 34:8——-O taste and see that the Lord is good;
B. As newborn babes, they had tasted the Word of God;
1. And they had found that the LORD was GRACIOUS
‘Gracious’ or ‘Kindness’ literally means “EXCELLENT”
“Come and DRINK from the PURE MILK of GOD’S WORD; TASTE and SEE if it isn’t EXCELLENT!!!!”
“Once a person has come to taste the EXCELLENCY of God’s Word, he should have a continuing appetite for spiritual food.” -The Bible Expositors Commentary
They say “We develop an appetite for the things we feed on”
C. I don’t mean this in a MEAN WAY, but:
D. If you GROW up listening to 15-20 MINUTE SERMONETTES;
1. You DEVELOP an APPETITE for that
E. But if you are being FED the WORD of God every Sunday morning;
1. You will develop an APPETITE for the WORD of God
Somebody once complained to their pastor here in Buffalo & said one Sunday:
“If we wanted that MUCH WORD, we’d go to CALVARY!”
HA-HA!!! WHAT A COMPLIMENT!!!
G. What does Peter teach us?
1. If there is SIN in the CAMP
2. It will KILL the SPIRITUAL APPETITE!
H. I’m so PROUD of ALL OF YOU!!!
1. You all wouldn’t have it any other way!!!
2. You LONG FOR the WORD
3. Even as A NEWBORN babe DESIRES MILK
4. So too, MOST ALL OF YOU…
a. Desire the PURE MILK of GOD’S WORD!!!!
I. If I got up and preached for 15-20 minutes one Sunday morning;
1. You’d all think I WAS SICK!
I am TRULY PRIVILEGED to Pastor a CHURCH of People who so love God’s Word!!! You bless me!!!!
CONCLUSION:
I. Put Away Sin, Once for all
II. So that we might mature spiritually
