“Raising Lazarus From the Dead”

Scripture

When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth”.  John 11:43

Observation

Lazarus had died. All hope seemed gone. Mary was in so much grief that she had a hard time looking to God for a miracle. Martha was full of faith, no matter what their circumstances, she believed in the power of God! At God’s exact appointed time, in God’s exact appointed way, He raised Lazarus from the dead! Nothing shall be impossible for those who believe.

Application

I see this and believe this is a word from God to me concerning the ministry of Calvary Chapel Buffalo. A word of knowledge, a promise from God Himself! I feel it the very hand of God upon our ministry and something awesome is about to happen in 2012. I believe God is about to do a work that will be felt by all of Buffalo. Lazarus had to die before God stepped in. CCB has become in many ways a ministry in ashes. So much pruning in our entire church family over the past 24 months – Lazarus had to die before God could resurrect the dead!

God spoke to my heart 6 years ago on that cool Chicago night of revival… “I have to build the man before I can build the ministry”. For 5 years, God has been pruning me and breaking me of self-dependence. And for the past 24 months God has been pruning our little ministry back- almost to the nub! Some might have looked at it and said, “It’s dead, it’s all over, they had their run, but now God’s moved on.” Not so, when Lazarus was suffering and about to die, they notified Jesus. But Jesus didn’t rush to their aid…He waited another couple of days, and Lazarus died. Every work of the Lord is a work out of the ashes. Until a man or ministry dies, God can do nothing. Until a man or ministry comes to the point of total reliance upon the work of the Holy Spirit, it can be nothing but a sick and dying entity.

For what God is about to do, ears will tingle, spirits will soar and God will be glorified! Greater things are yet to come in 2012. We’ve been on a roller coaster climbing that steep hill for 2 years and we’re about to crest the top of the track and watch the mighty hand of God raise another Lazarus! Do you believe? If so, you will see the glory of God! (John 11:40)

Prayer

“LORD, I believe! In Jesus’ name, I believe!” Amen.

Solid Ground

Scripture

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. Mark 13:31

Observation

Everything in this world is unsure, everything – the future, the economy, our government, world peace. Everything is like shifting sand and is set to pass away. Even as God has set an appointment for man to die, so too He has set a time that this present heaven and earth will pass away.

Jesus says that nothing is secure but His Word. He said that the world will pass away. Not “it might” or “it could”, but “it will pass away”. Only a fool puts his trust in that which is unsecure. The Bible says that ‘the foolish man builds his life upon the sand’ and when the storms come, he will experience total loss.

For a man to build his hope upon this life and the luxuries it affords is like a man investing his entire life in a beach home just before the tsunami hits.

Application

My trust must always be in the Word of God alone. What God says He means and I can take that to the bank. I can confidently build my entire life upon the promises of God’s Word.

The Word of God has always been and it will always be. Nobody can destroy it, and nothing can nullify it and what God promises, will happen in His time. It is the only way to live secure with peace in this world, and the wise man will build his house upon its promises.

I must constantly remember that I am a pilgrim passing through this world. I brought nothing into this world and I will certainly bring nothing out of it. My life is secure in Christ and in the world to come and I must keep my priorities straight.

I must guard my heart against the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches so that the Word of God is never choked out of my life. It’s a battle that I will always face – a battle between the temporal (and insecure) and the eternal absolute rock of security. What feels right now must never be allowed to overrule the truth of God’s Word. God’s Word is a rock that will not pass away, while my emotions may change, God’s Word remains the same.

No amount of ‘fixing up’ of this old world will make it any more secure (Government; economy; social good) – “it will pass away”. Man will never stabilize that which God intends to destroy and it’s a shame that so many Christians waste their lives trying to ‘prop up’ and ‘store up’ that which will pass away.

The only thing stable today in this otherwise unstable world is the Word of God. Jesus Christ warns us “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away”…so don’t build your security upon this passing world.

Prayer

Father, daily remind me to build my life upon the promises of Your Word. Thank You that Your Word never changes and it will never pass away.

In You, on Your Word I am secure. I love You and it is my joy to take you at Your Word and to build my life upon Your promises that will never pass away. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“How To Become Established”

June 21, 2011

Scripture

Put your trust in the LORD you God and you will be established. 2 Chronicles 20:20b

Observation

In this day of uncertainty, the world is looking for something secure. Anything or anyone promising security will do. Many in America are putting their trust in the next election, thinking that ‘if we can get a new President with a heart for America, then we can get back to our ‘Old Life’.’ Foolish people put their trust in man. Only the wise put their trust in the LORD. This is what Jehoshaphat said to Israel – “Put your trust in the LORD your God and you will be established.”

When a man puts his trust in the LORD, this means he is non-dependent upon his environment for his security and hope. It won’t matter what’s happening in the stock market, nor what is happening to the value of the dollar, nor who is in the White House. “In God we trust” is engraved upon our money, but apparently many people want to remove this declaration, and yet another group is not trusting in the LORD God, but rather they are trusting in the government. What fools! He who trusts in man, any man, will be disappointed; but he who trusts in the LORD his God will be established!

To be ‘established’ is to be secure, to live a life that is not affected by the external. He who sees himself secure in his finances, personal abilities or national security is trusting in shifting sand. Only those who put their trust in the LORD their God will genuinely become established. Only in the LORD is there true security, rest and assurance.

Application

In order for me to feel secure in life, I must put my trust in the LORD my God. I cannot lean upon my own understanding, nor can I trust in my abilities, nor can I trust in this life.

Everything in this life is insecure. Nothing is worth anything outside a total commitment to the LORD. I must trust in the LORD for all things and He will establish my paths. All other ground is sinking sand! My trust must be complete, with faith – not doubting and without back-up plans. Total commitment, total trust in the LORD my God, and He will establish my life!

Prayer

LORD, I fully trust in You alone! You are my rock; You alone are my high tower; You alone are my security in this lost and shifting world.

As this world and our economy becomes less stable every day, thank You that only You remain the same! Only You can establish a man in total security! You alone are security in this lost and shifting world. Reveal to me today any and every area of my heart or mind that is leaning on shifting sand. Help me today to lean only and fully upon You LORD! You know our circumstances. You know our financial needs.  I ask in Jesus’ name for confirmation and direction as to our finances.

Thank You LORD for the talents You have given me, although I trust in You – not my abilities. Guide my steps today. As I continue to trust in You alone, thank You LORD, that You will establish me! I love You so much! In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“Meeting My Needs” 6.14.11

Scripture

And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

Observation

What a great verse from a great chapter, from a great epistle, from a great man of God! God WILL supply all our needs! God is not broke. No matter what is going on with the economy, God is not restricted! The treasures and riches of the Lord are not based on Wall-Street, the value of a dollar or the global economy. God’s riches are secured in Christ Jesus, through Christ Jesus and because of Christ Jesus. Our requirement is to trust in Him who WILL supply all of our needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Note here that God WILL supply. It’s not that He might, or that He could, but rather God’s promise is that HE WILL supply ALL our needs. Paul says that God will supply all our needs. All, not some, but all! The key is that He supplies all our needs. He may not always supply all our wants, but He promises to supply all our needs. Jesus said in Matthew 6:33 that we are to seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things (all our needs) will be taken care of.

Application

What a promise! All throughout God’s Word He is constantly assuring us of His great provisions because of His great love for us! God delights in taking care of us! It’s not a ‘drag’ for God to supply all our needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus, because God is not cheap, He is not broke. I think that for many people who are greedy, they see God as greedy. For people who are generous, they see God as being generous. The idea in life is not to die with the most toys and the largest portfolio; I believe God wants us to be as generous with each other as He is to us! If I see God as a generous God, and He has called me to be like His dear Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, then I too must be a generous person. I don’t need to fear tomorrow. I can be generous and wealthy at the same time. As God supplies all of my needs and even many of my wants, I too am to imitate Him as a generous person. My goal in life should not be to die with the most toys or the largest bank account, but rather I desire to be noted as a generous person – the type of person who’d give the shirt off my back to help a stranger, and even more generous with those whose names are written in the ‘Book of Life’!

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, I just want to tell You how much I love You! Thank You for all of Your wonderful provisions for my life! You truly do supply ALL MY NEEDS and You often even bless me with many of my desires! You are a Good God, a wonderful God, a generous God and I love You! Thank You for this gift of eternal life that is mine because of Your incredible love for me in sending Your only Begotten Son, Christ Jesus to die for my sins. I just don’t have words that adequately express my love for You! You are wonderful! You are faithful! You are my best friend and I implicitly trust You with every detail of my life. Guard my heart today. Keep me from wandering away from You. May I abide in Your love, Your grace, Your mercy and Your generosity! And if I am ever tempted to doubt all Your wonderful provisions for my life, may I take comfort in this wonderful promise from Philippians 4:19.

Thank You Lord that You will never leave me nor forsake me!!! Help me to remember that as You continue to faithfully supply all my needs in Christ Jesus, that Your provisions may come in the form of an extra job to help meet my family’s needs. I love You and it is my joy to surrender to live for Your glory in all that I do! In Jesus’ holy name I pray, amen.

“The Power of Prayer” 5.4.11

Scripture

Matthew 21:21-22    (NKJV)      So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done. 22 And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”

Observation

Jesus had just cursed the fig tree and it blew the disciples away. They were amazed at the power of God and the power of prayer. Jesus cursed the fig tree for being a hypocrite (had leaves which were an indication of fruit; but the tree had produced no fruit), and the bible says that the tree immediately withered! When the disciples saw this, they were amazed at the power of prayer! Jesus took this opportunity to teach His disciples on the power of prayer. Jesus said “if you have faith and do not doubt when you pray…even greater things can be done!” Jesus says here (which is mind blowing!), “ALL things you ask in prayer, believing, you WILL receive!”

Application

The power of prayer is truly amazing! Tomorrow is national prayer day and I wonder how many people will be 1) praying for our nation and 2) praying by faith, asking God to do great and mighty things? I believe God desires to do greater things than what we often have the faith to ask for. I think that sometimes we ‘throw the baby out with the bath water’ when we discredit the power of asking by faith, associating this type of prayer as ‘word of faith-ish’. I believe that too often God calls me to a life of faith and I don’t pray or I ask in doubt and therefore I limit the power of God in and through my life. I want to see God do some mind blowing feats: in my life; in my family; in my church and in my nation! Today, God is calling me back into a life of prayer and faith. I need to start asking God for great and awesome things, by faith believing God! IF I want to see God preform some miracles, then I must #1. ASK Him; #2. Ask in Faith; #3. Wait expectantly to see the Lord’s great power! God’s promise to me today is that if I will pray according to His will, by faith, I WILL receive!

Prayer

Father today I ask in Jesus’ name that You would do a great and awesome thing in my life! May this day be the first day of many great and mighty miracles by Your great power. May I never restrict You in what You desire to do in and through my life. May I always believe You and have the faith to ask You, no matter how difficult my request may appear to me. Keep me from limiting Your power in my life because of doubt! I ask by faith for many more souls to be saved; I ask by faith for a radical transformation in my life, my family, my church and my nation!!! I believe that You have given me this verse today because ‘even greater things are yet to come!’ I love You and rejoice at the privilege of talking with You through the gift of prayer! In Jesus precious name, Amen!

“Rest” 05.03.11

Scripture

2 Samuel 7:9-11 (NASB)
“I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the names of the great men who are on the earth. 10 “I will also appoint a place for My people Israel and will plant them, that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, nor will the wicked afflict them any more as formerly, 11 even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. The Lord also declares to you that the Lord will make a house for you.

Observation

Here God brings to David’s memory His promise to give His people rest! God promised Israel that the LORD would bring them into a state of rest and that He would cut off all their enemies. God promised that He would remove from Israel everything thing that robbed them of their rest. The bible says that the LORD is the Lord of peace. Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace, and God gives the ‘peace that surpasses all human understanding.’ God promised peace and rest to the nation of Israel. God’s plan was to bring Israel into a place of rest from all her enemies. God also declared that He would make them a house. In other words, He would become their place of rest. As they dwelt in the land of promise, they would find rest and as they remained in that place, they would abide in His rest.

Application

When God saved me, His plan from the start was to bring me into a place of true rest – a place where He had destroyed all my enemies: my flesh, the world and the devil. God has created a dwelling place for me to abide in. That place is the perfect place of rest, the perfect and never ending state of total peace. As I abide in Christ, I am abiding in that place of rest. That place where I dwell in the presence of God’s eternal peace. I note here also that it is God alone who gives this peace. It doesn’t come from the enemies. It doesn’t come from making peace with the world, my flesh or the devil. True peace can only come from God. False peace is all the world has to offer. The world’s peace is temporal and predicated upon external circumstances, but God’s rest/peace is predicated exclusively upon His promises. It’s internal, completely disconnected from life and external problems I face in life. It’s amazing that that is possible, but it is and that’s God’s promise to me not only today, but for every day of my life! Total 100% rest and peace in and through every trial that life may bring my way. God is peace. He is love and He is rest. The bible tells me to “see to it that I fail not to enter into this rest” (Hebrews). If I am lacking rest in my soul, I need to draw near to God and He will draw near to me. Read it again! God says that HE will bring TOTAL REST from ALL my enemies today. My enemies include everything today that threatens to rob me of God’s perfect rest. Give them to Jesus in exchange for His perfect rest.

Prayer

Father today I thank You for Your perfect rest, the peace that only You can give my heart. You tell me in Your Word, “I will keep his mind in perfect peace, who’s mind is stayed upon Thee”, and today Lord I choose to keep my mind fixed upon You. Not upon the enemies of rest. Not upon those issues that stress me out and cause me to doubt Your great love. Today Lord I choose to abide in Your rest. I choose to abide in your rest. I’m Yours and Your rest is my reward for choosing to believe You and dwell in Your holy presence. I love You! In Jesus’ name, amen.

“Living For What Really Matters” 4.29.11

Scripture

Matthew 16:24-27 (NKJV)
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.

Observation

I note here that Jesus is speaking to His disciples. He is not addressing the lost – those who have rejected Him, but rather, Christ is speaking to His disciples – those who say that they belong to Him. Jesus said that anyone who seeks to be His follower must do three things. 1) He MUST DENY HIMSELF. That is, he must give up the rights to his life. A disciple of Jesus Christ no longer has any authority over his body, mind and will. A disciple of Christ will deny himself at the moment of salvation. He is no longer his own, but he now belongs to Jesus. 2) The disciple of Christ must TAKE UP HIS CROSS, which means he must make it his total goal in life to fulfill the call of God upon his life. The call of every Christian is to serve God by proclaiming the gospel and make other disciples. I have died to my old nature, my self-centered lifestyle. I no longer live for myself, but I now live for Jesus Christ. I have died to this world and all its allurements and enticements have died to me. 3) A true disciple of Christ must FOLLOW HIM. Pretty hard for a person to claim to be a disciple of Christ if they don’t even follow Jesus. That would be like claiming to be an employee but never showing up for work. Many people are trading their eternal rewards and destinations for the temporary pleasures and trinkets of this world. Many people today claim to be a disciple of Christ, yet they refuse to deny themselves, take up their cross and follow Jesus. Many people today, even in the church do not realize all the false gods that they are living for. ‘Gods’ that cannot forgive sin, or heal or comfort, yet so many people in the church today are living for these false ‘gods’. These false gods have stolen their allegiance to Jesus Christ. Instead of serving Him, many today are busy serving idols. Paul said that many false Christ’s will arise and John said that the spirit of the antichrist will prevail in the last days. Jesus Himself declared, “Will I find faith when I return?” The term ‘antichrist’ does not mean – ‘the opposite of Christ’; rather it means “to take the place of Christ”. An antichrist can be anything that takes the place of Jesus Christ and our 1st love for Him.  As they say “We worship what we serve, and we serve what we worship.” That could be possessions, money or even entertainment – constantly living for the new ‘thing’, or buried in debt trying to pay for the last cheap thrill. Travel, hobbies and even entertainment can rob a believer from being a true follower of Christ. Jesus says, ‘want to know who or what is really the lord of your life?’ ‘Then look at where you spend your time, money and talents. Look at what it is that you are serving. Anything in life that keeps a person from denying themselves, taking up their cross and following Jesus should be immediately dealt with because Jesus is coming back soon and His reward is with Him.

Application

I believe that many people today honor God with their lips, but their hearts are far from Him, and in vain they do worship Him. What a danger to be self-deceived. To be consumed by materialism or financial gain or worldly entertainment. God wants my full un-divided heart. He doesn’t want me to split up my loyalties between Him and the things of this world. In order for me to be a true disciple of Jesus Christ, I must deny myself, take up my cross and follow Jesus. As I am doing this, I must remember that God examines my motivation. I must keep a good heart and a short account with my Lord. Jesus said that if I love Him, I must follow Him. I must obey His commands and love others even as He loves me. It’s not always easy, but where He calls me to obedience, He also provides the ability to obey Him. Every decision I make today matters. What I choose to live for today will form my future and eternal rewards. Great will be the rewards of those who love the Lord as seen in the lives of those who deny themselves, take up their cross and follow Jesus. Though no one follow, still I will follow, no turning back, no turning back!

Prayer

Father I pray that You will guard my heart. I long to live for You alone! Remove far from me a covetous heart. Help me to remember that if I’m not satisfied in You alone, then I will never find satisfaction in anything in life. Remove far from me a covetous heart. Teach me to be content in all that You have blessed me with. May I find my true reward in denying myself, taking up my cross and following You. You alone are my LORD, my master, my God and today, I willing choose to live full-out for Your glory. I love You and I claim a fresh filling of Your Spirit upon my life so that I might live in total victory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“Guarding the Heart” 4.28.11

Scripture

Matthew 15:18-20 (NKJV)
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. 20 These are the things which defile a man…”

Observation

Jesus had just confronted the self-righteous Pharisees who had set aside the truth of God’s Word so that they might justify themselves through religious actions. It’s always so much easier to act religious than it is to obey the Word of God. The primary evidence of being in love with God is love for our fellow human beings – especially our love for the brethren. These Pharisees were self-absorbed, totally consumed in being viewed in a certain light and they didn’t care what was going on in their hearts, so long as they could deceive people into thinking that they were tight with God. Jesus rebuked these men for their self-righteous, hateful attitudes. These men were more concerned about looking holy than in living holy. Jesus said it’s not about what you eat that defiles you, but it’s what’s eating you that can defile you. For out of the heart the mouth speaks and reveals the true person. People who are filled with love, mercy and kindness – when they speak, love mercy and kindness flows from their mouths. People who are self-absorbed and consumed by hate, lies and piety; when they speak, they speak from this type of heart. As the eye is the gate ways to the soul, so too the mind is the gateway to the heart; and it is the mouth that reveals the true heart of a person.

Application

Today God is calling me to guard my mind, because it is the mind where Satan brings the attacks. If I can guard my mind, I will guard my mouth. When I don’t guard the thoughts that enter my mind, eventually my mouth reveals what my mind has been meditating on. Jesus tells me that it is my mouth that truly reveals my relationship with Christ. If my mouth is in contrast to who I think that I am, then I need to get my heart right with God.

Prayer

Lord set a guard over my heart today. My desire is not merely to suppress the thoughts and wicked intents of my heart, but I want to have a pure heart! A heart that desires good and not evil for all around me. May I only speak words that edify, build others up and encourage those around me. I love You! Amen.

“Critical Decisions” 4.27.11

Scripture

2 Samuel 2:1 (NKJV)
1 It happened after this that David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up to any of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up.” David said, “Where shall I go up?” And He said, “To Hebron.”

Observation

David continually sought the Lord in every decision he made. It’s interesting to me that David never came to a point where felt he knew God so well that he no longer felt the need to seek the Lord’s direction. David always needed to ask God ‘what should I do?” Some decisions seem so obvious, but yet w/o seeking the Lord 1st, one can make a real mess out of their life in a big hurry! I think that the inherent danger of maturing in the Lord is coming to a point where we feel that we know God so well that we no longer need to seek His direction w/in our lives. Not only did David seek God’s will about moving forward, but when God responded in the affirmative, David then asked a follow up question; “Which city in Judah shall I go up to?” “Ok Lord, I feel that You are leading me to go-up, now just give me the details – how, when, where.” Details are some of the most difficult directions to wait for, yet David knew the only way to have total victory was to obey all God’s directions. One of the greatest dangers of knowing God’s will is to run ahead of His timing without having all the facts.

Application

Today and in my future, I will be making many decisions. Some of my decisions will affect my future in very great ways. Some of my decisions today could affect me for the rest of my life. Some decisions may even affect me throughout all of eternity. We all face some pretty large decisions: where we will live; what will I do for a career; who I will marry; will I serve the Lord, and on and on. Other decisions seem rather insignificant: Color of my house; type of car I drive; what I will eat for lunch, and so forth. Now that I am over 40, I have come to realize that every decision has greater consequences than I could have ever imagined. I wish that I had been much more careful in my early years in the decisions that I made. Decisions are what have made me what I am today, and my decisions today will be what make me who I am tomorrow. If I make decisions without regard to the Lord, I will jeopardize my future. I may not be able to undo my past decisions, but I can sure guard my present and future decisions.

Prayer

Lord help me to be wise today in every decision that I make. Keep me from deciding what is important enough to come to You about. Remind me to come to You for every decision no matter how small it may seem to me, because in the end every decision I make will in some way effect my future. I love You! In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“The Right Heart” 4.26.11

Scripture

2 Samuel 1:11-12 (NKJV)
11 Therefore David took hold of his own clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him. 12 And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, for the people of the Lord and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.

Observation

David had just received the news of the tragic death of King Saul and his son Jonathan. David’s heart was broken in grief. He didn’t rejoice at the death of Saul. He didn’t take pleasure in the man’s life that had pursed him and sought to kill him. David was a man after God’s own heart, and David loved God’s people. The Bible tells us that even God does not delight in the death of the wicked and that God does not desire that anyone should perish. Yet God will never force anyone to do the right thing, which is to obey Him and to love Him and to follow Him. Life is hard and sometimes obeying God seems impossible, yet God still demands our allegiance in following Him. Saul disobeyed God and the end result was that God removed Saul as His King.

Application

God can raise up and use anyone He chooses. The only two requirements that need to be met are: 1) You must be called by God for the task; 2) You must surrender to God to follow and obey Him. Nobody is perfect and God is not looking for perfect people, but He is looking for people who have David’s heart. A heart of submission, forgiveness, and undying loyalty to Christ. D. L. Moody once said, “The world has yet to see what God can do with and for and through and in and by the man who is fully and wholly consecrated to Him. I will try my utmost to be that man.”

Prayer

Father today I praise You for Your amazing grace. Keep my heart tender to Your voice. May I always obey You in all that You call me to do. Give me a heart like David’s that can mourn the death of those who seek my harm. I love You and rejoice at being counted worthy to suffer for Your holy name! Amen.
