The Power of Prayer!

     James 5:13-20

Intro:

James ends his EPISTLE with – PRAYER

He begins with a series of QUESTIONS, all dealing with PRAYER…

1st of all, James asks:

James 5:13

13a Is anyone among you suffering?

The Word for suffering here is actually the word ‘AFFLICTION’

“To suffer evil affliction; or, to be AFFLICTED by evil”

Back in JAMES 5:10, James talked about –

The prophets SUFFERING AFFLICTION

“Suffering AFFLICTION is often the direct result of following Christ”

The Apostle Paul also spoke of SUFFERING from AFFLICTION:

2 Timothy 2:8-13

Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, 9 for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained.

2 Timothy 1:8

“…do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me – in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God,

We are to ENDURE———to SUSTAIN AFFLICTION

2 Timothy 2:3-4

You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

Paul in his FINAL WORDS to TIMOTHY exhorted him in –

2 Timothy 4:5

… be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

How often we feel like GIVING UP in the midst of AFFLICTION?!

But James says:

If you are suffering from AFFLICTION…what are we to do???

13b Let him pray.

How do we ATTAIN VICTORY in the MIDST of SUFFERING?

Go out to EAT?

Go to a MOVIE/ entertainment?

Get DRUNK or take DRUGS?

Go on VACATION?

Call a FRIEND?!

WORRY?!

GOD has a BUILT IN key to VICTORY in our SUFFERINGS — IT’S CALLED PRAYER!!!!

What is OFTEN times the LAST thing we do WHEN we are suffering?  ——— Pray!!!! Right?!!!

Why WORRY when we can PRAY? Yet we often think:

Why PRAY when I can WORRY?!

WORRY is SO PRODUCTIVE isn’t it?!

Which of you by worrying can change a single thing?!

Most often what we do is TRY EVERYTHING else 1ST!

THEN, if none of our other remedies work, we say…

“I Might as well PRAY, everything else FAILED”

Ephesians 6:10-18

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints–

The TOOL over all AFFLICTION is ALWAYS the – POWER OF PRAYER!!!!!!

Are you suffering AFFLICTION this morning?

What should you do?

PRAY……WITHOUT…..CEASING…….

The next QUESTION JAMES asks is:

13c Is anyone cheerful?

Or HAPPY?!

Somebody once said:

“We’re either in a trial, coming out of a trial, or getting ready to go into trial.”

Maybe you’re NOT SUFFERING this morning?

Maybe you’re HAPPY?!

That’s a GOOD THING, RIGHT?!

What’s the CONTINUED REMEDY for JOY?

13d Let him sing psalms.

SINGING the PSALMS!

There is something about SINGING GODS Word!

Other music can be enjoyable, but PRAISE N WORSHIP in times of joy!!!!

Singing God’s Precious PROMISES back to HIM!

PRAISE and WORSHIPPING the LORD!!!

Music has TREMENDOUS POWER to MOVE us!!!!

 When we SING God’s Word, we are making a DECLARATION of FAITH!

 “Lord, this is what I believe!”

When we are in times of JOY………SING PRAISES!!!

Somebody once pointed out that 2 of the GREATEST GIFTS ignored in the CHURCH today are:

 PRAYER and PRAISE!!!!

SO OFTEN…

When we’re HURTING, we DON’T pray like we should…

And when we’re JOY filled, we don’t PRAISE the LORD like we should!!!!

How OFTEN God answers our PRAYERS and yet in our JOY we FORGET our need to PRAISE HIM?!

I think of the 10 LEPERS Jesus healed and only ONE returned to PRAISE Him! Jesus said, we’re not there 10 of you? What happened to the other 9?

Sometimes the hardest time to seek the LORD is when times are GOOD; and I think that God often has allow the trials to get us back to PRAYER?!

But OH HOW GOOD IT is to be a PRAYING CHRISTIAN…..BEFORE the trials set in?!

If we want to live in CONSTANT VICTORY then we need to be on our KNEES in PRAYER; or on our TIP TOES in PRAISE!!!!!

RIGHT?!

When you’re HURTING;

* The way back to the KINGDOM is through PRAYER

When we are JOY FILLED;

* The way to WALK in VICTORY is through constant PRAISE!!!!

I would even recommend that PRAISING GOD through PRAYER will soften your SUFFERING

“I’m HURTING, but I’m going to COME TO GOD with a heart of THANKSGIVING and PRAISE!”

“Well, I don’t FEEL like PRAISING God…”

“Well then what you need to do is PRAISE GOD until you are filled with JOY!”

Hebrews 13:15

Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.

The reason GOD calls it a ‘SACRIFICE of PRAISE’ is because it COSTS us something!

 It’s HARD to PRAISE GOD when we are:

         Depressed -  Discouraged – Despairing

But the KEY TO VICTORY over DEPRESSION; DISCOURAGEMENT and DESPAIR is to——–

Simply begin to THANK GOD———–PRAISE HIM!

Now we’re NOT PRAISING God because we LOVE our CIRCUMSTANCES, but we are PRAISING Him because we TRUST Him and He tells us in His word to PRAISE HIM!

To PRAISE the LORD in a time of DESPAIR is an ACT OF FAITH!!!!

Do you want to DEMONSTRATE your FAITH through a TRIAL?

Then PRAISE GOD! When the ENEMY is EXPECTING us to DESPAIR and be DISCOURAGED, PRAISE God and watch your life TURN AROUND!

When we DON’T FEEL like praising God through a trial, and yet we do; eventually our TRIALS TURN AROUND and our hearts are FILLED with JOY!

The only thing worse than most of our TRIALS, are the FEELINGS of:

* Despair; Discouragement and Desperation we often feel!

BUT! We must remember that our EMOTIONS are just EMOTIONS

We cannot base TRUTH on our FEELINGS!

LET ME ASK YOU:

Is God any less in control when we are DEPRESSED than when we are CHEERFUL? Not hardly!

The key here is to realize that God has already provided the NECESSARY ingredients for VICTORY…

 NO MATTER WHAT we are facing—

* GOOD times and HARD times—

* God is always there!

Maybe today you’re NOT SUFFERING or CHEERFUL;

* Maybe your HEALTH isn’t WELL?

14a Is anyone among you sick?

‘SICK’ :  “Without strength; powerless; sick. to be weak, spiritually as in faith”

14b Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

What does the Bible tell us to do if there are any sick among us?

*STRESSED out?

Be filled with FEAR?

Be ANXIOUS?

I love it that that BIBLE gives us HOPE, even in our SICKNESS!!!

NOTICE here what James says:

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE to call for the ELDERS?———The SICK person, right?!

Too often we’ve had sick people in the hospital get back to church and they are all offended that nobody came to see them or pray over them…

BUT, if you’re sick and you DON’T TELL anyone, nobody will know.

There is a 2 PART relationship here:

#1. The SICK must call the ELDERS

#2. The ELDERS must PRAY and ANOINT the sick with OIL

#3. In that, God assumes the ANSWER to HEAL or not to HEAL

Sadly many MINISTRIES today do not believe in HEALING;

            * They feel that the gift of HEALING went out with the Apostles

            * And so they DON’T PRAY for their sick

They say that this refers to SPIRITUAL SICKNESS….I’m going to say YES! I think “sick” ALSO include the SPIRITUALLY SICK…anoint/ pray for them too!

I BELIEVE in the GIFT of HEALING and in the POWER of God!

I believe that GOD STILL HEALS and still does MIRACLES!

God healed me: encephalitis!!!!! (Lady at Church) lump in breast; Many others!!!!

Not that everyone we PRAY for and ANOINT with OIL will be healed;

But if we BY FAITH obey the WORD of God, He’ll do the REST!

Matthew 8:1-3

1 When He had come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him.

2 And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”

3 Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

SOME GOD HEALS, and SOME God DOESN’T heal – and ONLY GOD knows why

2 Corinthians 12:7-10

7 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure.

8 Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me.

9 And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Many people say that these verses are a GUARANTEE that if you FOLLOW this ‘FORMULA’ that you are GUARANTEED to be healed; and if you don’t get healed, then:

You LACK FAITH

Or you have SIN in your life

But they fail to understand the GRACE of God

We must simply do what God has called us to do:

#1. If you are SICK – call the Elders

#2. Elders pray and anoint w/ oil

#3. Trust God for His SOVEREIGN answer

15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up.

SICK here is different from V13:

“to be weary from constant work, causing physical, spiritual and emotional sickness.

“Weary of mind, which can hider physical recovery.”

The EFFECTUAL – FERVENT PRAYER of a righteous man ACCOMPLISHES MUCH!

It’s our PART to PRAY – and it’s GOD’S PART to RAISE him up

We CAN’T do the work of the LORD,  ONLY God can heal – We PRAY and GOD does the WORK

15b And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

Now there are some sicknesses that are directly attributable to sin

There are certain venereal diseases that are usually contracted through fornication or illicit sexual relationships, and thus there is a direct tie between the sin and the healing.

I think of that man in Mark 2:1-12

There was a man brought to Jesus by his friends, who had palsy

This palsy usually was the result of a syphilis infection

And it was, as the brain was deteriorating, the body began to shake, uncontrollably.

The person sort of began to lose, in the final stages, much of the motor function capacities of the body.

This man was in sort of that final state, the palsy resulting from the infection and  his friends brought him to Jesus for healing

And not being able to get into the house, you remember, because of the crowd, they went on the roof.  They lifted some tiles and let the man down in his bed with ropes before Jesus.

And Jesus, looking at the man, said, your sins are forgiven

I imagine his buddies on the roof were upset!  Lord, we didn’t tear the roof up so you could forgive his sin.  We want our buddy to party with us again.  We want him healed.

The Pharisees who were there had a very negative reaction.  They said who does this man think he is, saying your sins are forgiven?  Only God can forgive sin?  And they were correct in their assessment.  Only God can forgive sins.

And so Jesus was just proving that He was God.  He said, what’s easier to say, your sins are forgiven or to rise, take up your bed and walk?  Naturally, it’s easier to say, your sins are forgiven.

You know, you could go over to the mall and meet some kook, wild eyed, wearing a robe, going around and saying, your sins are forgiven!  That’s easy to say.  But you can’t prove it.  You can’t show it.  You can’t demonstrate it.

So it’s an easy thing to say.  But if you say, rise, take up your cot and walk, if the fellow just lies there, you say, no, that guy’s a fraud! But if the guy rises, takes his cot and walks, then you say, oh wait a minute!  What’s going on here? There’s power in that man’s word!

So Jesus said, what’s easier to say, your sins are forgiven?  Or rise, take up your bed and walk?  But that you might know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sin or that you might know that I am God! He then said to the man with the palsy, rise, take up your bed and walk.   Now, as far as this man was concerned, who had the palsy, to hear the words, your sins are forgiven.  I imagine it caused his heart to leap for joy! Because don’t you know that if you had committed, say the sin of fornication, or you gone to a prostitute, you had contacted syphilis, and you were in the final stages. Of course they didn’t have penicillin and other drugs to treat it in those days, and it went its course until you went insane and died. Don’t you know that as this disease was progressing in his body, that he was tormented and tortured by that experience that he’d had with the prostitute, where he became infected? As he would lie there, day after day, deteriorating, don’t you know that just plagued his mind? Why?  How could I have it?  That’s was so stupid!  Why?  Why?  Why?  It would have just absolutely plagued him. And for Jesus to say, your sin’s are forgiven.  This heavy load of guilt, the shame, the disgrace, lifted!

And as David said, oh how happy is the man whose transgression is forgiven, whose sins have been covered!

And so oftentimes in the Scripture, there was a relationship between the sickness and sin.

But that isn’t always so and it is absolutely wrong and ludicrous to make that assumption when a person is sick, that they are suffering as a result of some sin. That it’s some punishment of God for sin in their life.

God help us!  If that were so, none of us would be here this morning–  We’d all be home sick!!!

16a Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.

But be careful who you confess them to.

Illustration:

Three pastors had gone on a retreat.

As they were rooming together, they decided, here in James:

1) Confess your faults one to another

2) Pray for one another that you might be healed

The first pastor confessed to a problem with alcohol.  And how that he kept a bottle even stashed in his desk at the church.  And the real problem that he had with it.  The second pastor confessed to a problem that he had with women.  He was having an affair.  They turned to the third and they said, what about you brother?  He said, well, I have a real problem with gossip and I can’t wait to get out of here!

So be careful who you confess to!

And then this glorious promise!  This glorious promise—

16b The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

Effective, fervent prayer: “HEART felt PRAYER; The inspired prayer or the prayer of a righteous man wrought by the operation of the Holy Spirit”

The prayer that often rises out of desperation, out of tremendous need. I think, quite often, we’re rather cavalier in our prayer.  But it’s the effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man, avails much!

IT’S living a righteous life and PRAYING through our REQUESTS.

Keep on on asking, seeking, knocking !!!!

AVAILS MUCH: Has GREAT EFFECT. Capable of producing GREAT RESULTS!!!

AFFLICTED? pray!!! The Effectual fervent prayer accomplishes MUCH!!! THERE IS POWER IN  prayer wrought by the HOLY SPIRIT!

And now to illustrate this—he talks to us about Elijah

17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months.

Elijah was just a PLAIN, ORDINARY person just like us! He wasn’t anything special.  He was just an ordinary person with like PASSIONS that we have. That’s what James is telling us here.

Yet he PRAYED EARNESTLY (effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man) that it would not rain

And God withheld the RAIN for 3.5 years!!!

Talk about the POWER of PRAYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We’re tempted to WRITE it OFF as being ELIJAH;

         BUT HE wasn’t anything special!

         He had a NATURE just like OURS!!!

Can you begin to see how IMPORTANT & POWERFUL prayer is?!!!

18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.

What was the KEY? PRAYER!The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much…right?!!!

James closes his letter by saying,

19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back,

You GO to them; You TALK to them

You PRAY with them; You POINT out where they are going wrong

You TURN them from their ERROR

20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

Daniel wrote, he that wins souls is wise and shall shine as the stars forever and ever.

James tells you that if you lead a person out of error, one who has strayed from the truth.  And another converts him, you’ll save the soul from death, from damnation, and God will wipe away their sins.  You cover a multitude of sins.

The blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son,

Cleanses a man from all sins

It covers a multitude of sins.

There is power in prayer and it begins with the prayer of confession and salvation and then followed out by a life lived by faith and daily prayer.

“Hold On!”

James 5:7-12

Intro:

A. In Verses 1-6, James has just CONDEMNED the THINKING of the WORLD:

•          Those who HOARD what God gives them

o          Those who FAIL to PAY PROPER WAGES

          Those who LIVE LUXURIOUSLY

•          Those who HARM the JUST

B. The SATANIC thinking of the WORLD says:

“I want it ALL and I want it NOW”

3 of Satan’s primary lies state:

#1. “You’re a Christian, so you should never have to suffer”

#2. “You CAN have a covetous heart & it won’t EFFECT you”

#3. “You CAN have it ALL NOW, and you DON’T have to wait”

C. But notice what James says concerning RICHES and the HEAR and NOW…

James 5:7-12

7a Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord.

A. One of the most difficult traits in the world is patience!

1. We all struggle with having patience

‘Patient’ –

1) To be of a long spirit, not to lose heart

*Don’t become discouraged

2) to persevere patiently and bravely in enduring misfortunes and troubles

* Ties into faith, trust in God’s sovereignty

3) to be patient in bearing the offenses and injuries of others and to be mild and slow in avenging

* Give people the benefit of the doubt

4) to be longsuffering, slow to anger, slow to punish

*Suffer-long; submission to what God is doing in your life)

B. WHO is James speaking to?

1. The BRETHREN

2. Us!

3. We are to be PATIENT

4. We are to PATIENTLY ENDURE what God is doing in our lives

C. FOR HOW LONG?

1. Is there a GOAL

2. or are we just HANGING ON without a FOCUS?

D. James says that we are to BE PATIENT —-

‘UNTIL THE COMING OF THE LORD!’

E. What is the ‘COMING of the LORD?’

1. N.T. refers to BOTH:

a. The RAPTURE of the CHURCH

b. The 2ND COMING of CHRIST

F. Here, James is specifically speaking to us concerning:

1. The RAPTURE of the CHURCH

WE ARE NOT TO BE CAUGHT UP IN THE IMMEDIATE & TEMPORAL SATISFACTION FOUND IN THE RICHES OF THIS WORLD, BUT RATHER WE ARE TO PATIENTLY ENDURE THESE HARD TIMES KNOWING THAT THE RAPTURE WILL HAPPEN VERY QUICKLY

F. What is the RAPTURE all about?

1. Paul gives a GREAT picture of it in —

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.

15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep.

16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up (harpazo/TAKE BY FORCE/ RAPTURED…force suddenly exercised) together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.

G. We are to be PATIENTLY ENDURING the TRIALS of life;

1. NOT caught up in the THINGS of this WORLD

2. But we are to be ‘CAUGHT UP’ in living for Christ

a. Knowing that the RAPTURE is coming

Matthew 24:32-44

32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near.

33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near–at the doors!

34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place.

35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.

37 But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.

38 For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,

39 and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.

40 Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left.

41 Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left.

42 Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.

43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into.

44 Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

H. Apostle Peter also wrote concerning the RETURN of Christ in his epistle:

2 Peter 3:1-9

1 Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder),

2 that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior,

3 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts,

4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.”

5 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water,

6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water.

7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

I. The ONLY REASON that the LORD tarries in His Return;

1. Is for the sake of the ELECT

a. (the ELECT TO BE)

J. Paul said that he endured all things for the ‘SAKE OF THE ELECT’

We are to be PATIENTLY waiting for the DAY of the LORD; in contrast to the world who is ENGROSSED in the DECEITFULNESS of RICHES.

“You THEREFORE, do not be ENTANGLED with the AFFAIRS of this world, but PATIENTLY ENDURING for the SAKE of the ELECT (those who are yet to be saved)”

SATAN SAYS:

•          “WHY ENDURE TRIALS?!”

•          “WHY ENDURE HARDSHIPS?”

•          “YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL, AND YOU CAN HAVE IT NOW!”

That’s the TEMPTATION he THREW before Christ in the WILDERNESS

Matthew 4:8-11

Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” (You don’t need to go the way of the CROSS…You can have it all, and you can have it now!)

10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”

11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

Satan uses the SAME LIES on us, as he used when tempting the Lord Jesus Christ: “You CAN HAVE the GLORY without the CROSS”

BUT THAT IS A LIE FROM THE PIT OF HELL…

JESUS did not experience the GLORY until AFTER the CROSS

Just as with us…we must SUFFER a while NOW; and we shall be GLORIFIED together with HIM IN the END

We also see this DEMONSTRATED in the life of MOSES:

Hebrews 11:23-27

23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s command.

24 By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,

25 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin,

26 esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward.

27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible.

K. SO JAMES TELLS US BELIEVERS, TO—

‘BE PATIENT’ brethren, until the coming of the LORD—-

7b See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain.

A. When a FARMER PLANTS his seed;

1. He does not go out the next day looking for FRUIT

2. It takes many months for the FRUIT TO APPEAR

B. It’s the SAME TRUTH in our SPIRITUAL LIVES

1. Though we may be in the midst of VERY DIFFICULT times

2. It takes time for God to DEVELOP SPIRITUAL FRUIT in our LIVES!

3. NO FRUIT appears over night

C. Notice here, James refers to the FRUIT as ‘PRECIOUS FRUIT’

1. What is God doing w/in our lives as we PATIENTLY ENDURE…

GOD IS PRODUCING—PRECIOUS FRUIT within our lives!!!!

GOD IS PRODUCING FRUIT…THAT NO MONEY CAN BUY!!!!

That’s the GREATER TREASURE; and that’s why James says “DON’T GET CAUGHT UP in WRONG VALUES!”

“Don’t WASTE your life pursing TEMPORAL TREASURES, seek that which is ETERNAL……….THE PRECIOUS FRUIT of SPIRITUAL MATURITY!!!!!”

D. The Work that God is doing IN US –

1. During our TIMES of PATIENTLY enduring;

a. Is ETERNAL!

2. God is PRODUCING ETERNAL FRUIT!

In reference to MONEY/POSSESSIONS, they say “you can’t take it with you.”

BUT! In regards to ETERNAL FRUIT…”YOU CAN TAKE IT WITH YOU!!!”

Over the 40 years that I have been saved; many Christians that I have known have RUN from their trials and as a result- MISSED the PRECIOUS FRUIT of maturing!

But in my life, as I have endured and not run, God has been producing the PRECIOUS FRUIT that CANNOT be bought with any amount of MONEY!!!

In fact, as we PATIENTLY ENDURE the trials of life; we are STORING UP TREASURES in heaven!

ILLUSTRATION:

O.T. prophecy was that in the rebuilding of the Temple, there would be no sound heard in Jerusalem. That seemed impossible due to the size of the stones that were used. But in the rebuilding all the work was done in a rock quarry, several miles out of Jerusalem, and when the stones were hauled to Jerusalem, they were so perfectly cut, that you couldn’t fit a butter knife between these stones. So they assembled these stones without a single hammer. The Apostle Peter said –

1 Peter 2:1-5

1 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking,

2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,

3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious,

5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

We as believers are LIVING STONES that one day, God is going to assemble into His eternal TEMPLE…

And guess where the ROCK QUARRY IS???

You’re living in it!!! It’s this world, it’s your life right now. God is CHISELING OFF all the ROUGH EDGES as the Master builder PREPARING us for OUR ETERNAL HOME!

Now’s the WORK and the NOISE and the BUILDING…

BUT THE DAY IS COMING WHEN THE WORK WILL BE DONE, AND THE ASSEMBLING WILL BEGIN…

GOD HIMSELF will ASSEMBLE all the PRECIOUS FRUIT that He has produced within our lives…

AS WE PATIENTLY ENDURED…WAITING for the ‘DAY OF THE LORD!’

God Also promises the EARLY and the LATTER RAIN…

* The SPRING RAIN that GERMINATES the SEED

* The LATTER RAIN that brings the FRUIT to MATURITY

ILLUSTRATION:

We have an APPLE TREE in our back yard; and last year we WATERED IT SEVERAL TIMES each week and at the end of the season, it PRODUCED MUCH FRUIT.

This year we had a WET SPRING and we DIDN’T WATER it at all. In the SPRING, the FRUIT GERMINATED and began to GROW; but because of a LACK of LATTER RAIN, nearly NONE of the APPLES MATURED. 99% WILTED and fell to the GROUND because they had NO LATTER RAINS!

God promise, NOT ONLY to GERMINATE our SEED at the TIME OF SALVATION;

But ALSO to bring the LATTER RAINS that will BRING OUR FRUIT to MATURITY—–to produce the PRECIOUS FRUIT!!!

Philippians 1:6

6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

So what does James instruct us to do???? ————————-

8 You also be patient.

GOD BROUGHT THE EARLY RAIN; AND HE WILL BRING THE LATTER RAIN, BUT WE MUST BE PATIENT!!!!

“Flee youthful lusts; be SEPARATE from the world; live in sanctification; PATIENTLY ‘REMAINING UNDER’ our TRIALS as we WAIT for the LATTER RAIN!!!!!……………

FOR EVERYONE who will PATIENTLY ENDURE……….GOD PROMISES that He WILL bring the LATTER RAIN which guarantees the PRECIOUS FRUIT!!!!

LITERALLY – “TO HAVE PATIENCE”

A. Somebody once said “Well don’t pray for patience, because then the trials set in!”

1. But what they didn’t understand is that-

a. PATIENCE is a FRUIT of the SPIRIT!

Galatians 5:22       But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

B. If God has CALLED us to ‘BE / HAVE PATIENCE’…

1. Then it means that He also has PROVIDED the POWER to be –

a. LONG SUFFERING!

C. When we were YOUNGER in the LORD…we were LESS PATIENT

1. But as we GROW and MATURE, we BECOME more PATIENT

A child cannot wait for anything, but as he grows, he learns by experience to DEVELOP PATIENCE.

8b Establish your hearts (BE CONFIDENT — your patience is NOT in VAIN!), for the coming of the Lord is at hand.

‘ESTABLISH’ -

I think can also refer to ‘GUARD our HEARTS DURING OUR TRIALS’

I need the FRUIT of the Spirit—LOVE—during my TRIALS to GUARD my HEART, my THOUGHTS, and my WORDS…

LOOK at how James ties this idea of ‘ESTABLISHING our HEARTS’ into verse 9…

9 Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door!

I THINK THE DIRECT TIE BETWEEN THESE VERSES IS:

“If we DON’T ESTABLISH our hearts on the thoughts of God…we will GRUMBLE against one another during our TRIALS….”

BUT….

“If we DO ESTABLISH our hearts on the WORD of GOD; then we will not be as likely to GRUMBLE against one another during our TRIALS”

We’ve got to GUARD our HEARTS through PATIENCE while God is in the PROCESS OF bringing the LATTER RAINS, lest our hearts become filled with DISCONTENT and we end up GRUMBLING against one another…

Thereby SPOILING the PRECIOUS FRUIT of MATURITY

“It is a curious twist of human nature that in times of pressure we build up wrath against hose we love the most…hence the warning here”  (Believer’s Bible Commentary)

10 My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience.

A. One of the BEST WAYS to be ENCOURAGED during a TRIAL is to –

1. FIND  a MENTOR!!!!

2. someone who has ALREADY BEEN through –

a. What you are going through!

B. And one of the BEST WAYS to do that is through the WORD OF GOD!!!

1. JOURNALING

2. Allowing God’s MEN / WOMEN to MENTOR us in our daily struggles

C. if you want to find:

1. A quick list of MENTORS who’ve PATIENTLY endured before us…

A. Then read HEBREWS 11— the ‘Hall of Faith!’

D. One of Satan’s biggest LIES during our TRIALS IS:

“THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE; YOU’LL NEVER GET THROUGH THIS; HOW CAN GOD EVER EXPECT YOU TO BE PATIENT IN THIS?!”

****Mentors PROVE that it can be DONE, and the not only ENCOURAGE US to REMAIN PATIENT, but they show us how to be VICTORIOUS!

11 Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord–that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.

A. Great prophets like ISAIAH, JEREMIAH, DANIEL endured great trials

1. And we CALL THEM BLESSED!

a. They were RIGHT and the world was WRONG!

B. What we must remember is that while they went through great trials;

1. They ENDURED with PATIENCE

2. So God calls the BLESSED

If we want to be BLESSED, then we too must ENDURE PATIENTLY

C. Few men in history have ever suffered so much as JOB in so little time!

1. Yet he NEVER CURSED GOD

2. Nor TURNED from Him

DID GOD REWARD JOB FOR PATIENTLY ENDURING?

YES!!!——–IN THE END, GOD GAVE JOB TWICE AS MUCH AS HE HAD BEFORE HIS TRIALS BEGAN

D. The REWARD came, ONLY at the END of the TRIAL

1. AFTER…Job had PATIENTLY endured

2. Allowing God’s work to have it’s PERFECT RESULT

12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your “Yes,” be “Yes,” and your “No,” “No,” lest you fall into judgment.

A. Don’t let your EMOTIONS rule your mouth during your TRIALS

1. We need to guard what comes out of our mouths…

2. Especially when we are UNDER PRESSURE / STRESS

I think that one of the hardest things to do when the heat is on, is to guard our tongues! It’s so easy to say something that we don’t mean and later regret.

I believe if we will: ESTABLISH OUR HEARTS (V.8), then God will GUARD our mouths

CONCLUSION:

Be patient brethren, Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand…

“The Rich & Their Coming Remorse”

James 5:1-6 (Part 2)

INTRO:

1. Last week we began our study in James 5:1-6

A. And we LOOKED AT TWO of the FOUR —

a. CARDINAL SINS of the RICH

2. In Verse 1 James said:

James 5:1-6

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you!

*WHO are the RICH?

     1. Normally, it’s easy to envision some SAUDI shiek!

     2. But according to world standards…

     3. WE AMERICANS are the ones who are THE RICH!

“If you are an Americans, then you are more wealthy than 80 % of the REST of the WORLD! To live in AMERICA, the rest of the world considers us RICH!”

Somebody sent me this great QUOTE in an EMAIL last week after hearing my message on line, they quoted—

Matthew 19:23-24

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man (American) to enter the kingdom of heaven.

24 And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man (American) to enter the kingdom of God.”

Matthew 6:24

24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

NOBODY can LIVE for the TREASURES of this WORLD and for the LORD at the SAME TIME…it’s IMPOSSIBLE.

You are EITHER living for GOD or LIVING for the THINGS of this WORLD…

NOBODY can SERVE two masters…

Problem is, so many Christians are SO CARNAL, that they don’t even realize that they are SERVING worldly values and IDEALS.

They don’t really REALIZE that with THEIR LIPS, they say they LOVE GOD, but with their LIVES, they are LIVING for this WORLD.

J. In Verse 2, James went and gave us the 1st of 4 —

(CARDINAL SINS of the RICH)

#1. HOARDING

2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.

A. There is a TIME and a PLACE to INVEST what God has given us

1. He PLACES TREASURES in our HANDS for ONLY a SEASON

B. Once that SEASON is OVER –

1. If we have FAILED to INVEST our STEWARDSHIP in eternity

2. It’s TOO LATE

C. You and I will NEVER be allowed to –

1. Come back to THIS SIDE of ETERNITY and

2. DO with our FINANCES what we should be DOING NOW

D. I think of LAZARUS and the RICH MAN, in –

Luke 16:19-31

19 “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.

20 But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate,

21 desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.

23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’

25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.

26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’

27 Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house,

28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’

29 Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’

30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’

31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ “

E. NONE of us will be ABLE to RETURN to this LIFE

1. Once GOD CALLS us HOME — it’s over

Hebrews 9:27

And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,

F. The CALL of GOD upon every one of our lives this morning is:

1. ‘DON’T WASTE YOUR LIFE PURSUING RICHES’

Wealth is a MIRAGE. You never really attain unto a true FULFILLMENT. You always are CHASING the POT OF GOLD at the END of the RAINBOW. And you just NEVER QUIT get there.

Once you achieve your goal, if WEALTH is your GOAL; then you’ll never really be SATISFIED. You’ll always want MORE and MORE. Enough is NEVER ENOUGH.

And so SATAN snares MANY CHRISTIANS into wasting their lives, chasing this FLEETING VAPOR!

Matthew 16:24-28

24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

The TRUE MEANING to life is not found in TREASURE/wealth. It’s found in LOSING your life FOR the sake of JESUS CHRIST!

You see, people who are the COVETOUS/ HOARDER type are never really satisfied.

There is NO MEANING to life, even as a CHRISTIAN, unless you’ve DIED to yourself and are LIVING for CHRIST.

You can see this in:

     * FINANCES

     * TIME

     * PERSONAL VALUES

25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.

26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.

28 Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”

* I’d say, ‘I think that there are some sitting here who will not die, until you see the return of Jesus Christ!’

G. Concerning HOARDING

1. James also went on to say in verse 3 —

3 Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.

A. Again, the BEMA SEAT JUDGMENT will be –

1. A TIME OF GREAT TEARS FOR MANY BELIEVERS

a. (James says WEEPING and HOWLING)

B. For MANY CHRISTIANS,

1. I believe that that will be the 1st time that –

a. They really REALIZE how much they WASTED THIS LIFE

HOARDING is a FORM of COVETOUSNESS

COVETOUS PEOPLE are HOARDERS

* What’s the difference between a HOARDER/COVETOUS person…and a CONSERVATIVE person? Is there a difference?

HOARDER/COVETOUS is CHEAP; frugal; don’t spend money on themselves or anyone else.

While a CONSERVATIVE person is like the PROVERBS 31 woman—wise is the use of money and GENEROUS in HELPING OTHERS with what God has placed in their possession.

C. the 2ND CARDINAL SIN of the RICH is

#2. Acquiring Wealth by failure to pay proper wages

4 Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.

A. A lot of WEALTHY EMPLOYERS got their RICHES by -

1. DISHONEST GAIN

2. They FAILED to PAY their EMPLOYEES a PROPER WAGE

B. I think that what James is talking about here goes beyond—

1. Employer / employee relationship to:

a. Cheating on Income Tax

b. Weights and Measures

c. Bribing local officials

d. Falsifying Expense accounts

C. ANYTIME we profit from DISHONEST GAIN;

1. We are SINNING against God!

‘At the end of the day, we may end up with more $ in our pocket, but if it was acquired by NOT PAYING our fair share, it is a sin against God, and He hears the cries of those you take advantage of.’

(PART 2)

D. The 3RD CARDINAL SIN of the RICH is

#3. LUXURIOUS LIVING

5 You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter.

A. What is LUXURIOUS LIVING?

* Expensive JEWELRY

* Elegant CLOTHING

* Epicurean FOODS

* PALATIAL homes

The WORD OF GOD says that it is a SIN to live a lifestyle of SELF-INDULGENCE, when the rest of the world lives in DESPERATE need

William McDonald writes:

“How can we justify the affluence and extravagance of the church and of Christian people? We live in a world where thousands die daily of starvation. Over ½ the world’s population has never heard of the Lord Jesus Christ. In such a world, how can we justify our sports cars, limousines, speed boats? How can we spend the Lord’s money in expensive hotels, in high-class restaurants, in any form of self-indulgence?

The clear teaching of the Scriptures, the appalling need of the world, the example of the Savior, and the simple instinct of compassion tell us that it is wrong to live in comfort, luxury, and ease as long as there is a single soul who has not heard the gospel.

Those who live in pleasure and are unrestrained in luxury are likened to those who nourish their hearts as in a day of slaughter-like animals, fattening themselves just before their execution, or like soldiers who spend their time looting when others are perishing around them.

B. God never gives RICHES to be WASTED on LUXURIOUS living;

1. Or to be HOARDED

C. Everything that God places within our STEWARDSHIP is to be:

1. INVESTED BACK INTO the KINGDOM of God

D. Every DOLLAR we EARN, must be made HONESTLY;

1. And SPENT with the KNOWLEDGE of knowing that ONE DAY –

a. We will give an ACCOUNT for it

Many people make a LOT OF MONEY and the WASTE it on THEMSELVES, living in the LAP of LUXURY.

Those who SQUANDER their WEALTH LIVING in LUXURY will one day STAND in SORROW before GOD

E. This past week in ACTS 4, we all read in our JOURNALING:

Acts 4:32-35

32 Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common.

33 And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.

34 Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, (genuine Christianity is generosity!)

35 and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need.

CHRISTIANITY is NOT about being CHEAP; Nor is it about HOARDING; Nor is it about living a LIFE OF LUXURY.

Christianity is all about GIVING YOURSELF AWAY to JESUS CHRIST and a LIFESTYLE of SERVING and HELPING others

That’s why when Jesus told the RICH YOUNG RULE to “GO and SELL all that you have and GIVE IT TOO the POOR”, he couldn’t do it; because FOLLOWING CHRIST is all about GIVING UP THIS LIFE in EXCHANGE for the LIFE to COME.

F. The 4th and FINAL CARDINAL SIN of the RICH James lists is they:

#4. CONDEMN & MURDER THE JUST

6 You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you.

A. The rich will give an account one day for having abused the POOR

1. The rich murder the just by:

a. OVERWORKING them & UNDER PAYING them

B. The INNOCENT offer no RESISTANCE

1. To protest might end in BRUTALITY, PERSECUTION

2. Or being LET GO from their JOB

CONCLUSION:

What are some of the ways that we can be RICH?

* FINANCES (obviously)

* How, where, on what we spend our money

* TIME

* Rich in Time, LOT of EXTRA TIME to spend

* Where do you spend it?

* Do you waste your EXTRA TIME on self?

* Or, EXTRA TIME…SEEK to serve/help others?

* GIFTS / ABILITIES

* The greater your GIFTS, the greater your

responsibility is to God

Any and ALL of these areas of our lives we can:

HOARD or WASTE on ourselves

James says: “Come now you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you!”

Let’s NOT WASTE our lives ANY LONGER!

If you have thus far wasted the TREASURES that God has given you; REPENT and CHANGE today!

GO AND SELL everything in your life that keeps you from BEING A DEVOTED FOLLOWER of JESUS CHRIST, give the PROCEEDS to the POOR, and FOLLOW JESUS CHRIST!

4 Cardinal sins of the rich:

#1. Hoarding

#2. Failure to Pay proper Wages

#3. Luxurious Living

#4. Harm the Just

“The Rich and Their Coming Remorse”

James 5:1-6

Intro:

Somebody once asked J.D. Rockefeller:

“How much money will it take to satisfy you?”

To which he replied:

“Just a little bit more”

Isn’t that the way it is with money?

It ALWAYS takes ‘JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE’ to satisfy you

“Enough is never enough”

Once you achieve your financial goals, it’s never enough;

It  ALWAYS takes just a little bit more

  • James chapter 5 now;
    • James launches into a denunciation of the sins of the rich

If you have a PROBLEM with CONVICTION, you might want to LEAVE right about now!

A lot of people might at this point think:

“OK, GREAT! Let’s focus on the RICH and the WEALTHY people, because I’m not one of them…yet in accordance with WORLD STANDARDS, over 80% of American’s have more than 90% of the rest of the world. So based on world standards, most of us are rich. If you live in America, you ARE RICH!”

  • James’ denunciation is so strong that these verses are seldom preached on

  • James is really playing the role of  a prophet of social justice

  • He cries out against the failure of the rich to use their money for the alleviation of human need

  • He condemns EMPLOYERS who have become rich by exploiting their EMPLOYEES

  • He rebukes EMPLOYERS for their self-indulgence and luxurious living

* Many employers take advantage of their employees by –

* Not paying them sufficiently

* Many EMPLOYERS feel that this is their ENTITLEMENT

* That they are really doing their employees a favor by –

** ‘giving them a job in a bad economy’

I believe that much of the DECADENT lifestyles today being lived by many EMPLOYERS comes at the expense of their employees are not being paid a fair wage, and today JAMES condemns this treatment.

James also will deal with the Employer who makes very good money, yet fails to use his money to help others in need.

So EMPLOYERS will be hit TWICE:

            * Once for NOT PAYING their EMPLOYEES adequate WAGES

            * Once for NOT USING the money they MAKE to HELP OTHERS

  • James pictures the rich as arrogant oppressors of the righteous

James 5:1

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you!

A. James now begins chapter 5, with this summons for the wealthy to –

Weep and howl, because the miseries which they were about to experience,  Soon they would meet God and then they’d be filled with shame and remorse

B. They would see that they have been unfaithful stewards

1. James says that  —

They wILL wail over the opportunities they had missed; They would mourn over their covetousness and selfishness; They would be convicted about their unfair employment practices

They would see the sin of seeking security in material things rather than in the Lord, and they would weep many tears over the way they had indulged themselves to the full.                 – William McDonald

James now lists the -

4 cardinal sins of the rich:

            1. The 1st sin James deals with is found in vv. 2-3

#1. Hoarding Wealth

2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.

3. Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.

Many Christians today are living JUST LIKE the WORLD and they are ‘HEAPING UP TREASURES’ in these LAST DAYS

Somebody once said: “He who dies with the most toys, wins”

But the bible teaches just the OPPOSITE:

“He who dies with many RICHES and MUCH WEALTH will have the greater judgment!”

* SATAN does NOT want YOU to KNOW these TRUTHS.  He wants you to WASTE YOUR LIFE pursuing TREASURES / PLEASURES and INDULGING yourself in a WANTON/GLUTTONOUS lifestyle, because HE KNOWS that at the day of JUDGMENT, the CORROSION of the MASS of WEALTH and THINGS you have ACCUMULATED for yourself will BEAR WITNESS AGAINST YOU!

I don’t know what it is about SATAN and MONEY, but there is a VERY CLOSE TIE there, and he DESPERATELY wants you to WASTE YOUR LIFE pursuing VANITIES and MOTH EATEN TREASURES.

Psalms 127:1-2

1 (Solomon said:) Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain.

2 It is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep.

All that HARD WORK and all those LONG HOURS you put in at WORK…they are WORTHLESS unless you are A WISE STEWARD

Notice the 1st thing James says here in VERSE 2:

Your riches are as good as ruined”

“All those cloths that you’ve been HOARDING, they are MOTH EATEN. All your GOLD and SILVER that you’ve HOARDED, it is TARNISHED…and in fact the VERY TARNISH on your GOLD and SILVER———PROVE that YOU were a HOARDER

*Gold and Silver that is KEPT MOVING cannot CORRODE

 *Clothing that is USED and GIVEN AWAY has a longer LIFE SPAN than clothing that is HOARDED

Many Christians today, cling to their wealth instead of TRUSTING in the LORD; and one day before the JUDGMENT SEAT, their MOTH EATEN cloths and TARNISHED GOLD will TESTIFY AGAINST THEM – they HOARDED the possessions they were ENTRUSTED

It’s INTERESTING:

The VERY TREASURES that so many people HOARD today, will in ETERNITY, be the VERY THING that TESTIFIES against them.

They WONT be able to GET FAR enough away from all they HOARDED. Instead of looking back on having been a FAITHFUL STEWART of God’s things…

They will be ashamed that they were so SELF-CENTERED/ selfish.  And they WASTED the opportunities to GIVE to others what God had merely ENTRUSTED to them

The WORLD and SATAN tells us:

 “Get ALL you can; KEEP all you can — LET OTHERS FEND for themselves”

Yet GOD SAYS:

“The day is coming RICH MAN (person w/ abundance) when you will STAND before the LORD OF HOSTS and give an ACCOUNT of all that HE HAS ENTRUSTED YOU.

Those ‘THINGS’, those ‘POSSESSION’, that ‘MONEY’ is NOT YOURS to do with what you will; It ALL BELONGS to GOD, and one day VERY SOON, we will EACH GIVE AN ACCOUNT of how we used it

When God gives us a PAY CHECK; the SELFISH-HOARDER says:

“What can I do to make MY LIFE BETTER?”

“How can I spend this money on MYSELF?”

RATHER than to say:

“LORD, this pay check is 100% YOURS. Help me to be wise in its use”

When we TITHE 10% of our INCOME; the other 90% STILL BELONGS TO GOD; we are merely STEWARDS over it

God does NOT allow for ANYONE to become RICH for the PURPOSE of SELF INDULGENCE or to live a decadent lifestyle!

As long as there are people on the face of the earth that have never heard the gospel; and people who are starving; and people who are homeless—–i do not believe that anyone has the right to live in decadence

God doesn’t say “Here’s a SURPLUS beyond all your NEEDS, see if you can WASTE it on YOURSELF; or HOARD IT”

“If you have to CHEAT someone else to GET AHEAD, just know that NO MATTER HOW MUCH MONEY you make, IT will NEVER BE BLESSED by God!” (even if you tithe off of it)

Whatever God puts in our hand, is ALWAYS for the EXCLUSIVE purpose of STEWARDSHIP….

One day when we stand before the LORD, He’s going to ask each one of us:

 “WHAT DID YOU DO WITH THE RESOURCES that I ENTRUSTED TO YOU?”

Luke 16:1-13

1 He also said to His disciples: “There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and an accusation was brought to him that this man was wasting his goods.

2 So he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’

3 Then the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do? For my master is taking the stewardship away from me. I cannot dig; I am ashamed to beg.

4 I have resolved what to do, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.’

5 So he called every one of his master’s debtors to him, and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’

6 And he said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ So he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’

7 Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ So he said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’

8 So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light.

9 And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon, that when you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home.

10 He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.

11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?

12 And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is your own?

13 No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”

Drop down to verse —

Luke 12:13-34

13 Then one from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

14 But He said to him, “Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?”

15 And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”

16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.

17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’

18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods.

19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ‘

20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’

21 So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

22 Then He said to His disciples, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on.

23 Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.

24 Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds?

25 And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

26 If you then are not able to do the least, why are you anxious for the rest?

27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

28 If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith?

29 And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind.

30 For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things.

31 But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you.

32 Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

33 Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys.

34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

 Being RICH isn’t a SIN; it’s what a man DOES or FAILS to DO with his RESOURCES

A man may SIN with the RESOURCES that God has entrusted to him by:

                                       SPENDING it in SIN WAYS

OR

A man may SIN with the Resources that God has ENTRUSTED him by:

                                     HOARDING, or CHEATING OTHERS to GET AHEAD

If God provides: one MOUTHFUL of FOOD; one DOLLAR MORE than we need to pay our bills; or ONE SHIRT more than we need…then God has given us an opportunity to HELP OTHERS…not so that we can HOARD or become SELF-INDULGENT

CONSIDER the SERIOUSNESS of having the ABILITY to HELP, but NOT HELPING

1 John 3:16-18

16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him (hoarder-who will give an account), how does the love of God abide in him?

18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

James 2:14-16

14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? (James gives an example of TRUE FAITH:)

15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food,

16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?

It’s easier to say:

 ‘GOD BLESS YOU’ than to TAKE out our CHECKBOOK and HELP someone

* Many people JUSTIFY their CONSCIENCE by acting KIND…

                        * But they really DON’T HELP a PERSON

                                    * It just makes an EASY ESCAPE for the CONSCIENCE

*It’s easy to JUSTIFY not helping OTHERS with thoughts LIKE:

          * You just need to GET A JOB

          * You just need to QUIT being so WASTEFUL

          * That’s your own problem, we’re all responsible for OURSELVES

The Bible EXPRESSLY FORBIDS THE HOARDING OF WEALTH, WHICH DOES NOT BELONG TO US ANYWAYS, IT’S gODS.

No matter what ‘EXCUSE’ a person may use, at the END OF THE DAY, in the eyes of the LORD, it’s STILL HOARDING…

“Instead of putting their money to work, feeding the hungry, clothing the destitute, providing medicines for the sick, and spreading the gospel, the rich were saving their money for a “rainy day.” It benefited no one, and eventually rotted away.”     -New Believer’s Commentary

So #1, the 1ST CARDINAL SIN of the RICH is

        #1. HOARDING

The SECOND SIN James attacks is in VERSE 4 -

4 Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.

#2. FAILURE TO PAY PROPER WAGES

A. Here James is dealing DIRECTLY with EMPLOYERS

            1. Employers who MAKE a lot of money by CHEATING their EMPLOYEES

“the employees mow the employers grass, but the employer failed to pay a fair wage”

Let me just say here, if you are an EMPLOYER:

“Just because you can hire someone for $6/ hr., NO LAW AGAINST IT, and there are PLENTY more people who’d do that job for the same price, DOES NOT MAKE what you pay, an HONEST WAGE”

There are many DISHONEST EMPLOYERS who pay TERRIBLE wages to people who are HIGHLY SKILLED, and yet due to a BAD ECONOMY, some employers are using this as an EXCUSE to TAKE advantage of their employees

WORD FROM GOD TO SOMEONE——-

Well be WARNED ‘Mr. or Mrs. Employer’ :

* GOD SEES you and He sees what you are DOING.

* YOu may be PROFITING now, but the day of

    ACCOUNTING is coming soon!

God hears the CRIES of your EMPLOYEES who are being taken advantage of!

And maybe tomorrow when you get to work… you need to GET RIGHT with GOD and GIVE YOUR EMPLOYEES a RAISE…….MAYBE a HUGE RAISE!

Settle it now with the resources He has given you, before you weep tears when you stand before Him!

“Better is a handful with God’s blessing, than 2 hands full because of DISHONEST GAIN”

(My little proverb)

It’s better to GO TO BED AT NIGHT with a CLEAR CONSCIENCE and a SMALL BANK ACCOUNT; than to go to bed at night with a DEFILED CONSCIENCE and a LARGE BANK ACCOUNT!                        – Peter Friese

CONCLUSION:

Matthew 6:24-34

24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

28 So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;

29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

31 Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

C. You don’t have to go through life-

1. Taking advantage of others

2. Hoarding your resources

‘Seek 1st the will of God for your life’ and He will take care of you – He PROMISES TO!

Life is a Vapor

James 4:11-17

Intro:

Matthew 15:1-20

1 Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,

2 “Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”

3 He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?

4 For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’

5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”–

6 then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.

7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:

8 ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.

9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”

10 When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear and understand:

11 Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”

12 Then His disciples came and said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”

13 But He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.

14 Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”

15 Then Peter answered and said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”

16 So Jesus said, “Are you also still without understanding?

17 Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated?

18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man.

19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.

20 These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”

  • So Jesus said that it’s not what we eat that defiles us
    • But rather what COMES OUT OF OUR MOUTHS

*James also had a lot to say about the TONGUE

James 1:26

26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.

James 3:1-12

1 My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.

2 For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.

3 Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body.

4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires.

5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!

6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind.

8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God.

10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.

11 Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening?

12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.

* Now again, James deals with the tongue, beginning with 4:11

Study:

James 4:11-17

11 Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.

 “Speak Evil”

This means to slander or defame. James does not forbid confronting those in sin, which is elsewhere commanded in Scripture (Matt. 18, Acts 20; 1 Cor. 4; Titus 1, 2, 3). Rather, he condemns careless, derogatory, critical, slanderous accusations against others. Those who speak evil of other believers set themselves up as judges and condemn them. They therby defame and disregard God’s law, which expressly forbids such slanderous condemnation. By refusing to submit to the law, slanderers place themselves above it as its judges.      John MacArthur

James 1:21-25

21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;

24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

12 There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?

* Only Christ is qualified to JUDGE

  • Paul taught on this in Romans 14, concerning the BEMA SEAT

Romans 14:7-13

7 For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself.

8 For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.

9 For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

10 But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

11 For it is written: “As I live, says the Lord, Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God.”

12 So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.

13 Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way.

 James 4:13 -

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”;

14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

* Jesus gave a parable of a rich man who only considered this life

Luke 12:13-21

 James 4:15 -

15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”

16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.

Proverbs 27:1

Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.

James 4:17 -

17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

*Sin of OMISSION (Failure to do what we know to do)

    • Jesus dealt with this sin in -

CONCLUSION:

Matthew 25:14-30

14 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them.

15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey.

16 Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents.

17 And likewise he who had received two gained two more also.

18 But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money.

19 After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.

20 So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’

21 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

22 He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’

23 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

24 Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed.

25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’

26 But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed.

27 So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest.

28 Therefore take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.

29 For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.

30 And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

* It’s a serious thing to commit the sin of Omission – knowing what to do, but not doing it

* God has given us all gifts, and one day we will each give an account of the gift (s) that He has entrust us

* Are you serving God, or waiting for the perfect day? Life is a vapor, commit yourself today to follow Jesus Christ!

Pride Promotes Strife

“Pride Promotes Strife”

James 4:1-6

1 Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?

A. Now it may surprise some of you this morning;

                1. But not all Christians are perfect!

2. In fact there’s OFTEN STRIFE w/in the BODY of CHRIST

I think that sometimes we’d like to DENY that wouldn’t we?

I think that sometimes we’d like to PRETEND that STRIFE really doesn’t happen in the body of Christ!

C. Unfortunately, for SOME CHRISTIANS;

                1. They’re pretty NAÏVE & WHEN strife DOES HAPPEN…

It really throws them for a LOOP!

Somebody once said:

“If you ever find the perfect church, don’t join it. Because if you do join it, it will no longer be a perfect church!”

E. You see, we’re all sinners saved by GRACE!

                1. I still have my OLD NATURE

                2. YOU still have YOUR OLD nature

And every once in a while our OLD NATURES MEET! And it’s NOT  a PRETTY SIGHT!

If we’re mature, when we come to our senses, we apologize and ask one another’s forgiveness.

If we’re not mature, we hold grudges and don’t forgive. And then we wonder why our relationship with Christ dies?!

When I PRAY, why does it feel like God ISN’T LISTENING to me?

And when I READ my BIBLE, why doesn’t it SPEAK to me?

UNRESOLVED —- WARS and FIGHTS—

Strife IN and AMONG BELIEVERS

ILLUSTRATION:

Many years ago a man was found living on a DESERTED island.

When the captain arrived, he saw 3 huts and so he asked the man:

“Are there any other people here?” To which the man replied, “Nope, just me!” So the captain said, “Well then, why do you have 3 huts?” The man replied, “Oh that’s simple, this is the hut that I LIVE IN; and this hut is where I go to church”. Well, said the captain, that’s great, but what’s the 3rd hut for? “Well” Said the man, “that’s the church I used to go to!”

Strife is really a FELLOWSHIP DESTROYER

And what’s the BASIS for STRIFE/ WAR /FIGHTS?

It’s COVETOUSNESS / ENVYING our PRIDE

It’s the desire to POSSESS that which someone else possesses

All wars and fighting, even globally are based on ENVYING. One person desiring the possessions of another; or to CONTROL them

Warring and fighting with one another in the church is rooted in ENVY:

“I want what you have

“I want your ministry

“I want to your family

“I want your gifts

So the BATTLES that we ALL FACE, Really take place when we allow ourselves to be GOVERNED by our OLD NATURE

That’s what Paul talks about in ROMANS 7 –

That BATTLE between the NEW and OLD NATURES

When we RECEIVED CHRIST as LORD and SAVIOR; a NEW NATURE was CREATED within us and it is at CONSTANT WAR with the OLD NATURE

And when we YIELD ourselves to our OLD NATURE; we then are GOVERNED by ENVY / LUST / COVETOUSNESS

So then James goes on to say in Verse 2:

2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask.

A. When we are REGULATED by our OLD NATURES;

                1. Something INTERESTING takes place….

ODDLY, we discover that we are NEVER SATISFIED!

You can’t HAVE enough POSSESSION

You can’t MAKE enough MONEY

You can’t ENJOY enough ENTERTAINMENT

Because once we get what we are seeking, the THRILL leaves us, and then the SEEKING BEGINS again

Both unbelievers and carnal Christians are much the same in that they are SEEKING…

SEEKING the next FIX

The next FLING

The next PLEASURE

The next EXPERIENCE

But NEVER SATISFIED – As James says here:

“You LUST and you DO NOT HAVE”

We will NEVER be SATISFIED as long as we are REGULATED by our PASSIONS

When we are REGULATED by our LUSTS, we’ll never find satisfaction

And all we WILL FIND is that we are CONSTANTLY FIGHTING with our-

FAMILY; FRIENDS; CHURCH MEMBERS

So the 1st OPTION is to be a SEEKER:

Unsatisfied

Miserable

Discontented

The 2nd option is to become an ASKER

Notice here in the LAST part of VERSE 2

“The ALTERNATIVE to being a SEEKER, is to become an ASKER!”

We need to START ASKING GOD for things and stop being regulated by our LUSTS/ ENVY / covetous hearts

Maybe the 1st thing that we all should ask the LORD for is:

“that He would take away our ENVIOUS hearts. That we’d stop being JEALOUS of one another. When one PROSPERS, don’t COVET, REJOICE!

Now some people will say, “Yeah, well PRAYER DOESN’T WORK!”

To which James responds in Verse 3 -

3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.

A. What’s our MOTIVES for PRAYER?

                1. What’s behind our MOTIVES in ASKING?

Here James says that GOD EDITS a LOT of our PRAYERS!

Big RED PEN… NOPE! Not a chance! Not My will

If we are PRAYING according to OUR FLESH, then we Might as well SAVE OUR BREATH!

Jesus said in John 3:

“That which is BORN of the FLESH will always be of the FLESH”

So if it’s MY FLESH prompting my ASKING, then I can be assured that God will NOT FULFILL my request!

EVERY ministry that is BORN OUT OF THE FLESH will NOT SUCCEED!

I believe that we have seen a LOT of ‘MINISTRIES’ born out of the FLESH here at CCB!

People who have BEGUN ministries only to FAIL or DROP them off on my door step to CLEAN UP THE MESS;

Because they were MINISTRIES born out of the FLESH!

They were ministries BORN out of ENVY & STRIFE & they FAILED

Just because we PRAY ABOUT SOMETHING doesn’t make it FROM GOD!

I think that too often we can be in the FLESH, motivated by LUST / EMPTINESS, which prompts us to PRAY that GOD WILL OPEN the DOOR for us to TAKE OVER  or START a MINISTRY

And when God doesn’t OPEN the DOOR, too often, people attempt to FORCE the HAND of God, or CLAIM that God ‘LED THEM’ to this

Do you realize that a person can even seek to be in MINISTRY, and be motivated by LUST / GREED / ENVY?

James says in Verse 4

4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

Friendship with the world speaks of-

“Friendship with the WORLD SYSTEM; or the world’s way of THINKING – lust; greedy; envious; deceitful; dishonest”

Those are symptoms of the world’s way of dealing with life

And God says, if you are a FRIEND to that kind of thinking, then you have made yourself an enemy of God!

WOW! That’s serious isn’t it?

And all the time, we were just thinking that ‘I’M JUST GETTING AHEAD’

And all we’ve really managed to do it make ourselves an ENEMY of God’s!

Jesus said in -

Matthew 16:26     For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

Sometimes the REASON that a person is being CONTROLLED by the LUSTS of their FLESH is because –

They were NEVER REALLY SAVED in the first place

The word ‘ADULTERERS and ADULTERESSES’ , not only has to do with SEXUAL IMMORALITY, but also and maybe even more specific in this instance…has to do with –

—–SPIRITUAL ADULTERY—-

The leaving of one’s 1ST LOVE

Having DEPARTED from the FULFILLMENT of WALKING with Christ

“It used to be enough, JUST TO BE WITH JESUS…anymore, I just can’t find SATISFACTION!

“I guess I’ve become a SEEKER…always SEEKING the NEXT EXPERIENCE; next TOY; next PLEASURE

“I’ve lost my 1st love with JESUS CHRIST!”

“He used to be ALL I NEED; now I have EVERYTHING and I’m still empty!”

Jesus said in –

Revelation 2:2-5
2 I know your works, your labor, your patience (busy beaver: SERVING; studying; praying), and that you cannot bear those who are evil (hate sin). And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars (great discernment);
3 and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary (when everybody else QUIT serving; you kept on).
4 Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.
5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works (fall back in love with Christ. It’s NOT about SERVING; it’s about LOVING), or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place–unless you repent.

Those who EMBRACE the WORLD’S SYSTEM, make themselves an ENEMY of God

WHO is James speaking to here??? BELIEVERS!

Believers have the opportunity to make themselves an ENEMY of God’s

Christ’s ANTIDOTE to WORLDLY living was given in –

Matthew 6:19-24
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

In James 4:5, James says -

5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?

God loves you so much, that He jealously watches over you!

He does NOT want you to GIVE your HEART away to anything else

Think of a person you really love and really desire their attention and affection.

Now think of that person, knowing how much you love and care for them, yet they really don’t place much value on your love

They spend time with other people, doing other things and they’re really missing out on being with you and being loved for who they are

That’s a SMALL illustration of how God feel about you!

He loves you so much, and He jealously yearns for the spirit that He has created within you

Now that’s love!

DON’T THROW PEARLS BEFORE SWINE

Don’t give your love away to another

Love the LORD thy God W/ all thy heart and SOUL and MIND!

When we HUMBLE ourselves and REPENT, James says in verse 6 -

6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”

GOD GIVES MORE GRACE!!!!

No matter how long you’ve been the PRODIGAL son/daughter

GOD’S GRACE is GREATER than ALL your sin!

What is GRACE?

It’s God BLESSING us when we deserve to be PUNISHED!

MERCY is the WITHHOLDING of JUDGMENT

GRACE is the FAVOR of God in lieu of PUNISHMENT

Maybe you say today:

 “Well, I’ve been away from God A LONG TIME… what then?”

All I can say is:

 HE GIVES MORE GRACE!

A ‘PROUD’ person sees themselves in the MIRROR and says:

“I see my sin, but I’m not too bad” and they REMAIN as THEY ARE

Where the HUMBLE person says:

“Today, I’ve seen myself in the MIRROR of God’s Word, and I FALL SHORT!”

“I’ve left my 1st love; I’ve become a SEEKER; I’ve stopped ASKING; I’ve become controlled by my passions and I’m ANGRY and at WAR with God and always FIGHTING with my neighbor.”

To the HUMBLE…God grants His GRACE, His MERCY, His LOVE

CONCLUSION:

Where are you at today?

Always looking for the next fix?

Never satisfied?

COME BACK TO JESUS

Come back to YOUR 1ST LOVE!

Have you been committing SPIRITUAL ADULTERY?

Giving away your heart to the things / pleasures of this world?

God loves you, and He wants you back

Maybe you’ve become a FRIEND to the WORLD’S VALUES

Jesus is JUST a part of your LIFE

He no longer DOMINATES your PLANS

He no longer DICTATES your GOALS

Return to Him today

“God gives more grace. Therefore He says: God resists the proud, But He gives grace to the humble”…shall we pray?

True Wisdom Comes From God (Part 3)

James 3:13-18 (Part 3)

Intro:

A. Two weeks ago (Part 1), we began our study on Wisdom

       1. Everybody operates on the wisdom they possess

B. James says that not all wisdom is from God

       1. In Part 2, last week, we saw that some wisdom is earthly, sensual, demonic

C. Some people are filled with a GOOD ENVY of other believers;

       1. And it CAUSES them to DESIRE to BE LIKE those they RESPECT

D. Yet others are filled with BITTER ENVY

       1. Which causes a person to

“Desire to DESTROY the GOOD they see in another”

E. This type of ‘WISDOM’ is NOT from God

1. But rather, this is the WISDOM of the WORLD; SENSUAL; DEMONIC

F. And James went on to say (verse 16);

       1. That where this type of ENVY and STRIFE exist;

       2. There will be CONFUSION and EVERY EVIL work

G. And that’s the problem with STRIFE/BITTER ENVY

       1. Your life just begins to UNRAVEL

       2. You make BAD DECISION after BAD DECISION

       3. And a person’s life just begins to FALL APART

H. People who dwell in this realm, and CONTINUALLY SPIRALING DOWNWARD

1. There is just NO LIMIT to the DEPTH of DESPAIR that

a. Satan will take you too –

a. If you SURRENDER to this type of ‘WISDOM’

I. It’s just NOT OF GOD

    1. God is not the AUTHOR of CONFUSION, or of –

2. HATE / BITTERNESS / DESTRUCTION

J. I was even amazed this past week in my BIBLE READING;

       1. How when JUDAS ISCARIOT had the audacity to

a. REBUKE MARY for ANOINTING Jesus feet

K. What I had NEVER NOTICED before was that

1. CHRIST DIDN’T confront JUDAS for being a THIEF;

      2. He just told JUDAS to leave MARY ALONE

L. Even Christ did NOT COME TO JUDGE the world;

       1. Listen to what He said in –

John 12:46-47

46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. 47 And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.

M. Even Christ did not come to JUDGE the world;

       1. Yet so many people today are DECEIVED into –

a. This JUDGMENTAL WISDOM;

              b. That is EARTHLY; SENSUAL; DEMONIC

So today, James gives us a CLEAR DESCRIPTION of GODLY WISDOM—

            1st of all in Verse 17, James says:

James 3:17-18 (NKJV)

17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.

A. let’s break this verse down a bit;

       1. 1st of all the word ‘WISDOM’ as we studies in PART 1 of this series;

‘WISDOM’

“The quality of being wise, the power of judging rightly and following the soundest course of action, based on knowledge, experience, understanding etc. Good judgment; discretion.”

B. WISDOM is the ABILITY to make CORRECT DECISIONS;

       1. Based on GIVEN KNOWLEDGE

C. Many people can have MUCH KNOWLEDGE

       1. But only some have GODLY WISDOM

D. And you remember in PART 1 of our SERIES;

       1. That WISDOM actually referred to a WISE MAN or a WATCHMAN

“A watchman used to ascend to the mountains so that he might see all around. He would seek a FULL and CLEAR view of his surroundings before he would make his decision.”

E. We saw the example of this with King BALAK / BALAAM;

      1. How King Balak to BALAAM up to the TOP of the MOUNTAIN before he cursed Israel

Again in the N. T., the Greeks who would study the solar system and the movements of the heavens were also called ‘WISE MEN’ because they sought to regulate their lives based on the movements of the heavens.

A. So the basic idea in true wisdom is to GATHER all the FACTS before we make BIG DECISIONS

       1. Who to MARRY

       2. Where to LIVE

       3. CAREER / CALLING in life

So 1st of all James says –

17a But the wisdom that is from above

From Above’ means “From the TOP

A. it’s the same word that is used in MK. 15:38 when the TEMPLE VEIL was torn –

1. ‘From TOP to BOTTOM’

“TRUE WISDOM comes from the TOP DOWN”

B. Mankind thinks that he is so WISE;

       1. Yet w/o WISDOM from ABOVE;

       2. There can be NO TRUE WISDOM

Romans 1:18-32 (NKJV)
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man–and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

C. TRUE WISDOM is ALWAYS –

       1. “From the TOP DOWN”

D. Then James says, the PROOF that it did come from ABOVE, is that it –

17b – is first pure,

A. God’s Wisdom is———- FIRST PURE

FIRST’:

“firstly in order; first of all; chiefly; before”

TRUE WISDOM that has COME DOWN from ABOVE, will be FIRSTLY PURE”

PURE’

“Innocent; modest; clean”

The wisdom that God imparts is PURE from EVERY FAULT / MOTIVE

“If a person desires to know if he/she is operating under the wisdom of God, the 1st thing they should do is EXAMINE their MOTIVES”

1. “Why am I doing this”

2. “Why am I not doing that?”

3. “If I make this decision, what is motivating me?”

       a. Are my MOTIVES PURE?

PURE motives are always the basis for Godly wisdom

Paul describes this kind of PURITY in the Corinthian church in his 2nd letter

2 Corinthians 7:8-11 (NKJV)
8 For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it. For I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while. 9 Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. 10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
11 For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things you proved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

C. The MOTIVE of their hearts were PURE

1. Their repentance was W/O IMPURITY

       2. They had INNOCENT MOTIVES in their REPENTANCE

Philippians 4:8-9
8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure (God’s wisdom is 1st PURE), whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy–meditate on these things.
9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

E. TRUE WISDOM always begins with PURITY /MOTIVE

       1. “What is MOTIVATING me to make this decision?”

F. Often times it’s FEAR

       1. Fear is MOTIVATING us to MOVE FORWARD

       2. When God is really saying

I think this a ‘Word’ from God for someone here today. You’ve been asking God for an answer, and He says to you today:

“Be still and know that I am God. You don’t need to worry. My wisdom is PURE. I will lead you. I will show you where to go and what to do. Just do NOT FEAR”

The word ‘PURE’ here, also has to do with the word ‘HOLY’

‘PURE’ / ‘HOLY’—–

“Free from the admixture of evil; free from defilement.”

“when tested it is proven PURE”

If you were to hold your heart, or motivation up against the SUNLIGHT, your motives would not reveal any hidden cracks

ILLUSTRATION:

Hypocrite” – Like wax added to a marble statue. Statue appears to be ‘whole’ / ‘pure’, yet when scrutinized by the SUNLIGHT, the WAX MELTS and proves the statue IMPURE

To be PURE/HOLY is to ‘be w/o hidden motives ore agendas’

G. Often a person’s DECISIONS can seem either:

    1. VERY GOOD

    2. Or VERY BAD

H. Yet we really can’t see the MOTIVES of a person’s heart;

       1. So we let God REVEAL their CHARACTER over time

I. Eventually what is hidden will come to light

1. GOOD or BAD

J. So 1st of all—

17 …the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable,

A. Denotes ‘PEACEFUL’

       1. There is a sense of PEACE that comes from the WISDOM of God

B. You and your family may be facing a very difficult decision;

       1. And you don’t know what to do

C. When God’s Wisdom is imparted, and you as the leader make the call

       1. IT PRODUCES PEACE

       2. or PEACEFULNESS

“I know that this is what God is calling us to do. I have peace over this matter. I may not know how this will turn out, but God has given me His peace”

God’s wisdom never brings CHAOS, RUIN or DESTRUCTION

Wisdom from above, begins with PURE MOTIVES, and results in a peacefulness. A rest. A confidence.

“I don’t need to do anything else”

D. Wisdom from above is also -

17d gentle,

“Appropriate or Patient”

A. God’s wisdom will never harm others

B. God’s wisdom produces patience with others

       1. It allows others there ‘SPACE’

We don’t know where one another are at in our walks with God. True wisdom causes us to be gentle with others

17e willing to yield,

“Compliant; easy to be in treated”

“Heavenly wisdom is unchanging, well-persuaded of its own unchangeableness. Heavenly wisdom can be freely approached. It is not rigid, but is open to discussion; will not waver but will attempt in gentleness to persuade.”

17f full of mercy and good fruits,

Mercy is the opposite of JUSTICE

In JUSTICE we may give someone what ‘THEY DESERVE’. Whereas MERCY is really to PARDON someone.

The wisdom of God READILY PARDONS others

If you see or know or are a person W/O MERCY; then you are watching or acting with wisdom that is NOT of God

God’s WISDOM is MERCIFUL

Even as GOD DELIGHTS in giving us MERCY

So Too HIS WISDOM will ALWAYS PRODUCE the GOOD FRUIT of MERCY

Nothing worse than a MERCILESS PERSON

Satan is W/O MERCY and those who operate W/O MERCY are operating in earthly/ sensual / demonic wisdom

If you are a MERCILESS person, I’ll caution you, God has your number!

“Blessed are the MERCIFUL for they shall receive MERCY”

17g without partiality and without hypocrisy.

God’s wisdom is without uncertainty or indecision,

Wisdom that is from above is SECURE / stable / confident

There’s just a SURETY that comes with GOD’S WISDOM

“I know that I know; that I am to make this decision”

ILLUSTRATION:

1. To marry Celeste (God gave us both confidence)

2. Often a decision to move in one direction seems absurd;

       a. Yet God gives the PEACE and ASSURANCE to GO FORWARD

18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace (rest/quietness).

“The SEED contains the FRUIT”

“Those who MAKE PEACE, produce a HARVEST of RIGHTEOUSNESS

Peace is the sense of rest and contentment

“Ah, this is good. Relaxed. Restful. Confident”

“True Wisdom Comes from God” (Part 2)

James 3:13-18

Intro:

A. Last week in verse 13, James said:

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom.

B. Now in verse 14, James continues—

14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.

A. The phrase ‘BITTER ENVY’ has an interesting interpretation:

          1. FIRST OF ALL, the word ‘BITTER’ means:

‘BITTER’ – “Causing pain; piercing; stinging.

Characterized by: intense antagonism or hostility.”

The word ‘BITTER’ actually comes from the ROOT WORD which means:    “To FIX or to SET UP (a tent) – PITCH”

A person who FIXES their FOCUS on another person’s WELL BEING; which causes them PAIN and manifests in INTENSE ANTAGONISM or HOSTILITY

B. The word ‘ENVYING’ here can have 2 meanings;

          1. One meaning has to do with DESIRING to be like another person

          2. The 2nd type of ENVYING is what James uses,

a. Meaning to SEEK to HARM another

C. The DEFINITION of this word is so POWERFUL and so KEY to our study;

          1. That I’d like to READ the entire DEFINITION to you

The GREEK word for ENVY is the word:

‘ZELOS’ = “Zeal or ENVY which can be used in a GOOD SENSE. Zelos signifies honorable emulation with the consequent imitation of that which seems excellent.”

In other words, godly envy can produce a desire to receive the same blessings as another person may have

“According to Aristotle:

‘zelos’ grieves, not because another has the good, but that one does not have it, and seeks to supply such deficiencies in himself. However, ‘zelos’ may degenerate into a desire to MAKE WAR UPON the GOOD which it beholds in another, and thus to trouble that good and diminish it. This is why we find ‘zelos’ (envy) joined together with CONTENTION.”

A. ENVY or ZEAL can be for GOOD or for HARM

          1. When we OBSERVE the GOOD in another

                   a. We may GRIEVE because we do NOT have it in our own lives

          2. OR…

                   a. When we observe GOOD in another CHRISTIAN;

                             i. If not careful, we may become JEALOUS of them

                             ii. And our ENVY could change from GOOD to BAD

                             iii. Creating within us a DESIRE to MAKE WAR / HARM them

What JAMES is WARNING us of is to be careful if you:

“To FIX your EYES upon another person’s GOOD. If it CAUSES PAIN (which is jealousy), turn away quickly lest it result in INTENSE ANTAGONISM or even HOSTILITY towards that person”

A person with BITTER ENVY is a person who seeks to DESTROY the good they see in others.

One of the 1st Biblical accounts we see of BITTER ENVY is found in Genesis 4

I’d like to have you turn there with me please…

Genesis 4:1-8

1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.” (she thought he was the Messiah)

2 Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3 And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. (the work of his hands. God had shown them to offer the sacrifice of an animal, but Cain made up his own rules and brought vegetables instead of a blood offering.)

4 Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, (God accepted Abel’s offering, because it was made by faith and OBEDIENCE to God’s instructions)

5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.

A. This is where the BITTER ENVY set in

1. CAIN had DISOBEYED God’s clear instructions,

2. While ABLE had by FAITH obeyed the LORD and as a result;

a. God ACCEPTED ABEL’S offering

B. So what did Cain do?

1. Did he REPENT and get RIGHT with God —

a. That he might be BLESSED TOO?

C. NO!!!

1. Instead he displayed this BITTER ENVYING of his brother ABEL

2. Not to be LIKE him but to DESTROY him out of JEALOUSY!

a. That’s what BITTER ENVYING does

“It may take a while to set in, but when it comes to FRUITION; it’s only mission is to DESTROY the person(s) it’s JEALOUS of. But what the destroyer doesn’t realize, is that he / she is destroying themselves at the same time.”

6 So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?

A. God calls him to account

1. He’s really pointing out Cain’s BITTER ENVYING of Abel

2. And God is WARNING CAIN—

‘YOU’D BETTER DEAL WITH THIS WEED in your heart before it DESTROYS YOUR OWN LIFE!’

B. You see, CAIN was JEALOUS of ABEL

          1. Because Able OBEYED God and was BLESSED for it

C. While CAIN DISOBEYED God

          1. And was REJECTED for it

D. So instead of REPENTING and DOING the RIGHT thing;

          1. He became JEALOUS of ABLE

                   a. And SOUGHT to DESTROY him…

E. If you don’t think that BITTER ENVYING will destroy your life;

          1. Look at what it did to CAIN’S LIFE—

F. Now 1st of all, God WARNS CAIN;

          1. You can GET IT RIGHT and be BLESSED

G. OR…you can SUCCUMB to the TEMPTATION of JEALOUSY of ABLE

          1. and let BITTER ENVYING — destroy your life

7a If you do well, will you not be accepted?

A. Do you see what God is telling CAIN?

          1. DO RIGHT — BE BLESSED

          2. DISOBEY ME — and you will SUFFER the CONSEQUENCES

B. Your problem CAIN is NOT ABLE

          1. Your problem CAIN is your own REBELLION to do the RIGHT THING

                   a. So DON’T BLAME Able

“The CONSEQUENCES of       YOUR SIN is your OWN FAULT. You can’t blame anyone else but YOURSELF. And I’ll even be GRACIOUS and GIVE you space to REPENT so that you TOO will be BLESSED!”

C. You see;

          1. The PROBLEM with BITTER ENVY is…

          2. Satan deceives you into thinking that—

“Your problem is really the person who has the life you want. Your problem is really that you’ve been handed the SHORT END of the STICK.”

So if you can just DESTROY the person you’re JEALOUS OF, then you will finally feel some relief.

But notice what God says to this FOOLISH type of ‘WISDOM’

7b And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door.

A. In other words,

          1. If you REFUSE to REPENT of your BITTER ENVYING

          2. The CONSEQUENCES are WAITING at your DOORWAY

                   a. Waiting to DESTROY your life!

“You can do what is right and be blessed like your brother ABLE; or you can EMBRACE the BITTER ENVYING in your HEART; but BEWARE, the IMMEDIATE destruction to your life is waiting for you.”

7c And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”

A. “Cain, BITTER ENVYING is a battle for a lot of people

          1. BUT GOD… has given you VICTORY over it

                   a. BUT YOU…must chose to OBEY and DO RIGHT

But CAIN didn’t listen to GOD and he ALLOWED the BITTER ENVYING of his brother ABLE to GROW.

And DAY-BY-DAY, his BITTERNESS and RESENTMENT towards ABLE grew, until finally one day—

8 Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

BITTER ENVYING finally got the BEST of CAIN and his JEALOUSY finally overcame him and he KILLED Abel.

A. When other believers obey God and He blesses them;

          1. And all the while we may be LIVING in disobedience

          2. When GOD BLESSES those who are LIVING RIGHT

We all face 1 of 2 choices

          #1. We can ENVY them and DESIRE to be blessed like them

          #2. We can allow our Envy to turn to BITTERNESS;

a. Which leads to destruction:

          * Destruction of a relationship (ruined friendship/marriage)

          * Destruction of fellowship with God (no more intimacy)

          * In the END a TOTAL WASTED LIFE (better to not live)

Galatians 6:7-10

7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.

8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.

9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.

A. Why’s God always bless everyone else?!

1. Why doesn’t He ever bless me?!

2. I’m living right, what’s wrong?!

B. Don’t grow weary, you will reap in due season

1. God’s promise to us all!

Only other option is to allow BITTER ENVYING of those who we see as blessed to DESTROY us and our relationship with them!

10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

The ALTERNATIVE to being filled with BITTER ENVY of another is: DO GOOD to the person you are tempted to be JEALOUS of!

The Bible uses this word for ENVY in several other texts, such as:

Acts 5:12-18 (NKJV)

12 And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon’s Porch.

13 Yet none of the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly. 14 And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, 15 so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them. 16 Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed. 17 Then the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with indignation,

18 and laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison.

D. The Pharisees were JEALOUS of the GOOD they saw in the APOSTLES;

          1. So they sought to DESTROY them

          2. “BITTER ENVY”

Also, another example of the FORM of this word is used in —

Romans 13:11-14

11 And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

F. The WORLD lives in STRIFE and ENVY

          1. Constantly seeking to HARM one another

          2. Constantly seeking to EXCEL at the COST of SOMEONE ELSE

G. And JAMES says, that’s NOT GOD’S WISDOM

God’s wisdom would NEVER seek to HARM someone else in order to get a head.

If your hear is filled with BITTER ENVYING; Know that – that “WISDOM” is not from God

It is never God’s way for you to harm someone else in order that you might be recognized.

if you see good in someone else and it motivates you to harm them, heads up! you’re not hearing the voice of god!!!

Paul also used this word in —

Galatians 5:19-21 (NKJV)

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

J. So obviously BITTER ENVY;

          1. A seeking to DESTROY the GOOD in someone else you see

          2. Is from the PIT OF HELL

          3. And if that describes your heart, then you’d better FLEE!!!

K. BITTERNESS is an EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ALIMENT!!!

          1. Turn with me to —-

Hebrews 12:12-17 (NKJV)

12 Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees,

13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed. 14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.

“BITTER ENVYING: A desire to destroy the good you see in someone else.”

NOT WISDOM from God

Note also here in Verse 14, James adds this word: STRIFE:

‘STRIFE’ = “Susceptible of being bribed or corrupted, selfishness, a self-willed positive-ness.”

A. To me it really brings up the idea of REBELLIOUS

          1. A person who creates STRIFE is a REBELLIOUS person

B. Again, JAMES is WARNING CHRISTIANS not to be filled with:

          1. BITTER ENVY and STRIFE

People who have BITTER ENVY are people who are SUSCEPTIBLE of being CORRUPTED by other people’s WORDS and IDEAS.

Do you realize that GOD ALLOWS SATAN to TEST your faith?

          1. Is your faith / WISDOM founded on FERTILE SOIL?

Satan is seeking those whom he may devour; and one of his greatest weapons I believe is through BITTERNESS; ENVY and STRIFE

God allowed Satan to TEST JOB’S FAITH. Satan didn’t believe that Job loved God without ulterior motives.

Do you know that Satan’s greatest strategy against you this morning is to

#1. Set your eyes on upon man (fixed / bitter)

#2. Make you jealous

#3. Fill your heart with ENVY

          a. So that you seek to DESTROY the GOOD you see in others?

If Satan can do that to you, then he has won. He has defeated you and made your faith ineffective.

It doesn’t matter what reason you stand on as to why you want to harm another Believer, all that matters is that Satan has you.

He has your heart…he has your mind…you have given him complete power over your life if this is the wisdom you allow your life to be regulated by.

James says here “don’t’ glory in this”

Don’t PRIDE YOURSELF in your ability to cause HARM to another person.

There is NO GLORY in your SHAME

Jesus said that there will come a day when people will seek to destroy you and they will think that in doing this, they are SERVING GOD.

But they are DECEIVED by the devil. As James says here:

“Don’t glory in what you should be ASHAMED OF!”

“Do not TAKE A STAND AGAINST THE TRUTH & call it ‘godly wisdom’”

*** the BIBLE says that —

15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic.

A. Back in James 3:6, James said:
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. (Gehenna; the place of lost souls)

B. And now in verse 15, James says that:

          1. Bitter Envying w/ Strife is NOT FROM GOD

          2. But is from this WORLD / FLESH / DEMONIC

C. Do you know that one of Satan’s names is the ‘DESTROYER’?

          1. Any SO CALLED ‘WISDOM’ that leads you to DESTROY another person…

Is WORLDLY/ SENSUAL/ DEMONIC, and any spiritual sense of ‘doing the right thing’ is FALSELY being produced by the FATHER OF LIES.

Satan comes as an angel of light, and the Holy Spirit will never lead you contrary to God’s written Word!

D. And if what you are doing in the NAME OF WISDOM is –

          1. Seeking to HARM / DESTROY / RUIN another BELIEVER

          2. You must know that you are DECEIVED

16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.

‘Confusion’ = “unsettled / turmoil. The loss of orientation (life/correct values). Mental confusion (Wikipedia) has to do with inability to focus; poor judgment and a loss of normal brain function.”

A. CONFUSION is the RESULT of being governed by:

          1. BITTERNESS; ENVY and SELF-SEEKING

1 Corinthians 14:33

For God is not the author of confusion but of peace—

B. And NEXT WEEK, when we CONTINUE w/ verse 17;

          1. We’ll learn of THE WISDOM that is FROM ABOVE…

C. Shall we pray?

“True Wisdom Comes From God” James 3:13-18 (Part 1)

Intro:

A. Today in PART 1, we are going to talk about WISDOM

1. ‘TRUE WISDOM COMES FROM GOD’

2. Much of what the WORLD calls ‘WISDOM’ is really DEMONIC

B. Next week in Part 2 of this message;

1. We’ll look at the CONTRAST between:

a. GODLY and DEMONIC wisdom

C. But for TODAY, we’re only going to look at VERSE 13

1. WISDOM is defined by:

Webster New World Dictionary

“The quality of being wise; the power of judging rightly and following the soundest course of action, based on knowledge, experience, understanding etc. Good judgment; discretion.”

Biblical Definition for ‘Wisdom’

“The knowledge of how to regulate one’s relationship with God, wisdom which is related to goodness. When one is wise unto God, he is prudent with others, and knows how to regulate circumstances.”

‘Wise’

“Wise with God and man. Both in respect of true spiritual and heavenly wisdom; and also of false or worldly wisdom.”

KNOWLEDGE is the accumulation of INFORMATION

WISDOM is the CORRECT decision made from KNOWLEDGE

C. Anybody can accumulate KNOWLEDGE on just about any subject

1. But not everybody is WISE

2. Or has the WISDOM to:

a. Make the CORRECT decisions based on known information

James 1:5     If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

D. WHO this morning would like to INCREASE your WISDOM?

1. Let’s ask God to do that for us, in agreement with His Word —-

13a Who is wise and understanding among you?

A. The KJV uses the phrase:

“Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you?”

‘Wise’

Literally refers to a ‘Wiseman’. And it signifies a ‘WATCHMAN’.

In the O.T., these watchmen used to ascend to the MOUNTAINS so that they might see all around. They wanted a FULL and CLEAR VIEW of their surroundings before making a decision.

“Before they would make a DECISION, they would climb to the top of the highest mountain in order to see CLEARLY, that they might make a WISE DECISION. So they came to be known as ‘WATCHMEN or WISE-MEN’.

B. A great example of this is found in the O.T. book of Numbers;

1. With KING BALAK and BALAAM

Numbers 22:1-41

Then the children of Israel moved, and camped in the plains of Moab on the side of the Jordan across from Jericho. 2 Now Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. 3 And Moab was exceedingly afraid of the people because they were many, and Moab was sick with dread because of the children of Israel. 4 So Moab said to the elders of Midian, “Now this company will lick up everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.” And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time. 5 Then he sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor at Pethor, which is near the River in the land of the sons of his people, to call him, saying: “Look, a people has come from Egypt. See, they cover the face of the earth, and are settling next to me! 6 Therefore please come at once, curse this people for me, for they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”

7 So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the diviner’s fee in their hand, and they came to Balaam and spoke to him the words of Balak. 8 And he said to them, “Lodge here tonight, and I will bring back word to you, as the Lord speaks to me.” So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam. 9 Then God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?” 10 So Balaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me, saying, 11 ‘Look, a people has come out of Egypt, and they cover the face of the earth. Come now, curse them for me; perhaps I shall be able to overpower them and drive them out.’ ” 12 And God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.”

13 So Balaam rose in the morning and said to the princes of Balak, “Go back to your land, for the Lord has refused to give me permission to go with you.”

14 And the princes of Moab rose and went to Balak, and said, “Balaam refuses to come with us.”

15 Then Balak again sent princes, more numerous and more honorable than they. 16 And they came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Zippor: ‘Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me; 17 for I will certainly honor you greatly, and I will do whatever you say to me. Therefore please come, curse this people for me.’ ” 18 Then Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, “Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more. 19 Now therefore, please, you also stay here tonight, that I may know what more the Lord will say to me.”

20 And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men come to call you, rise and go with them; but only the word which I speak to you–that you shall do.”

21 So Balaam rose in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab.

22 Then God’s anger was aroused because he went, and the Angel of the Lord took His stand in the way as an adversary against him. And he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.

23 Now the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand, and the donkey turned aside out of the way and went into the field. So Balaam struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road. 24 Then the Angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, with a wall on this side and a wall on that side. 25 And when the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord, she pushed herself against the wall and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall; so he struck her again. 26 Then the Angel of the Lord went further, and stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left. 27 And when the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam; so Balaam’s anger was aroused, and he struck the donkey with his staff.

28 Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”

29 And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have abused me. I wish there were a sword in my hand, for now I would kill you!”

30 So the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey on which you have ridden, ever since I became yours, to this day? Was I ever disposed to do this to you?” And he said, “No.”

31 Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand; and he bowed his head and fell flat on his face.

32 And the Angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to stand against you, because your way is perverse before Me. 33 The donkey saw Me and turned aside from Me these three times. If she had not turned aside from Me, surely I would also have killed you by now, and let her live.”

34 And Balaam said to the Angel of the Lord, “I have sinned, for I did not know You stood in the way against me. Now therefore, if it displeases You, I will turn back.” 35 Then the Angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but only the word that I speak to you, that you shall speak.” So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

36 Now when Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the city of Moab, which is on the border at the Arnon, the boundary of the territory. 37 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not earnestly send to you, calling for you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able to honor you?” 38 And Balaam said to Balak, “Look, I have come to you! Now, have I any power at all to say anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, that I must speak.” 39 So Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kirjath Huzoth. 40 Then Balak offered oxen and sheep, and he sent some to Balaam and to the princes who were with him.

41 So it was the next day, that Balak took Balaam and brought him up to the high places of Baal, that from there he might observe the extent of the people.

C. So Balak took Balaam to a HIGH PLACE

1. a Mountain top in order that he might SEE all of ISRAEL

2. Watchmen

3. Wiseman

D. In the N.T.

1. The GREEKS would STUDY the STARS and SOLAR SYSTEM

2. They would observe the COURSE and MOTIONS of the HEAVENS

a. They called themselves ‘WATCHMEN’ / ‘WISE MEN’

b. Which meant:

“One who knows how to regulate his course in view of moments of the heavens or of God.”

‘Wiseman /wisdom also refers to ‘SKILLFUL EXPERT’

E. When I think of a ‘SKILLFUL EXPERT’

1. I think of KING SOLOMON and the GREAT WISDOM God gave him!

1 Kings 3:5-13

At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask! What shall I give you?” 6 And Solomon said: “You have shown great mercy to Your servant David my father, because he walked before You in truth, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with You; You have continued this great kindness for him, and You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. 7 Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. 8 And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted. 9 Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people (wisdom/understanding), that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”

10 The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. (God delights when we ask for wisdom)

11 Then God said to him: “Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, 12 behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you. 13 And I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days.

F. just a few verses later, Solomon displayed this WISDOM of God:

1. In that infamous story of the TWO MOTHERS –

1 Kings 3:16-28

Now two women who were harlots came to the king, and stood before him.

17 And one woman said, “O my lord, this woman and I dwell in the same house; and I gave birth while she was in the house. 18 Then it happened, the third day after I had given birth, that this woman also gave birth. And we were together; no one was with us in the house, except the two of us in the house. 19 And this woman’s son died in the night, because she lay on him.

20 So she arose in the middle of the night and took my son from my side, while your maidservant slept, and laid him in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. 21 And when I rose in the morning to nurse my son, there he was, dead. But when I had examined him in the morning, indeed, he was not my son whom I had borne.”

22 Then the other woman said, “No! But the living one is my son, and the dead one is your son.” And the first woman said, “No! But the dead one is your son, and the living one is my son.” Thus they spoke before the king.

23 And the king said, “The one says, ‘This is my son, who lives, and your son is the dead one’; and the other says, ‘No! But your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.’ ”

24 Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword before the king. 25 And the king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to one, and half to the other.”

26 Then the woman whose son was living spoke to the king, for she yearned with compassion for her son; and she said, “O my lord, give her the living child, and by no means kill him!” But the other said, “Let him be neither mine nor yours, but divide him.”

27 So the king answered and said, “Give the first woman the living child, and by no means kill him; she is his mother.”

28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had rendered; and they feared the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to administer justice.

G. And SOLOMON’S fame spread throughout the WORLD!

1 Kings 10:1-9

Now when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the Lord, she came to test him with hard questions. 2 She came to Jerusalem with a very great retinue, with camels that bore spices, very much gold, and precious stones; and when she came to Solomon, she spoke with him about all that was in her heart. 3 So Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing so difficult for the king that he could not explain it to her. 4 And when the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, 5 the food on his table, the seating of his servants, the service of his waiters and their apparel, his cupbearers, and his entryway by which he went up to the house of the Lord, there was no more spirit in her. 6 Then she said to the king: “It was a true report which I heard in my own land about your words and your wisdom. 7 However I did not believe the words until I came and saw with my own eyes; and indeed the half was not told me. Your wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame of which I heard. 8 Happy are your men and happy are these your servants, who stand continually before you and hear your wisdom! 9 Blessed be the Lord your God, who delighted in you, setting you on the throne of Israel! Because the Lord has loved Israel forever, therefore He made you king, to do justice and righteousness.”

A WISEMAN who is filled with UNDERSTANDING is truly BLESSED of God!

I. So James says:

13a “Who is wise and understanding (intelligent) among you? (among us as believers)

13b Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom.

A. So James here is speaking to the CHURCH;

1. “If anyone is WISE and INTELLIGENT…

2. THEN……let him SHOW it

God’s WISDOM is not RESERVED for an elite few; it’s available to all believers

‘SHOW’ = ‘Become part of; to be identified with’

Good conduct is to be DISPLAYED through the life of a WISE MAN/ WOMAN

‘Good conduct’ = ‘Constitutionally / IN CHARACTER, — good w/o necessarily being benevolent.’

‘Good conduct’ really describes the CHARACTER of a person.

What makes a WISE and INTELLIGENT believer is their CHARACTER. Not so much that they are ALWAYS BUSY DOING good things…

It’s more RELATED to WHO they are as a PERSON.

‘GOOD’ here also speaks of:

“Beauty in characteR     (i LOVE THAT – BEAUTIFUL PERSON)

‘good’—

Harmonious in lifestyle; completeness, balance, proportion.”

B. When I think of a person who is WISE/UNDERSTANDING;

1. They are the people who have a BALANCED LIFESTYLE

2. Everything in their life is in PROPORTION

3. They live w/in their means

4. They DON’T over budget themselves / time / finances

a. That’s WISE!

b. That’s INTELLIGENT!

C. when you get to the end of the DAY and you still have TIME;

1. Or money in your checkbook

2. Or time for your WIFE and KIDS

‘GOOD CONDUCT’ —-BALANCED lifestyle

D. Doesn’t mean that your always having to DO GOOD THINGS;

1. Means you are BALANCED

“Sometimes ‘BALANCE’ means having to SAY NO!”

“NO is a COMPLETE sentence. And sometimes in order to KEEP BALANCE in our lives, we HAVE TO SAY NO.”

E. If you have the KJV this morning;

1. It READS:

“Let him show out of a GOOD CONVERSATION”

F. At first I wasn’t sure I liked that TRANSLATION so much;

1. But the more you think about it, the more it makes sense!

G. Jesus said

“out of the abundance of the HEART the MOUTH speaks”

GOOD SPEECH reveals a WISE and UNDERSTANDING person

I LOVE being around people who are EDIFYING in their SPEECH…DON’T YOU?

I. After you get done TALKING with a Wise/Understanding person;

1. You FEEL EDIFIED!

2. “That was TIME WELL SPENT!”

3. “I’m so blessed to know SO AND SO”

I. As we talked about last week:

1. The TONGUE is POWERFUL!

2. It EITHER: builds UP or TEARS DOWN

And you know how ‘YUCK’ you feel after you’ve stood around listening to someone GOSSIP! James says, it’s DEMONIC in NATURE. It comes from GEHENNA, the place of LOST SOULS. No wonder it makes you feel so TERRIBLE!

James says that the ‘man who cannot bridle his tongue, his religion is worthless’

The OPPOSITE of an UNBRIDLED TONGUE is a TONGUE filled with WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING! You know, the kind that EDIFIES you! The kind of CONVERSATION that makes you LOVE GOD MORE and a sense of LOVE for those who you are speaking to!

J. A WISE and UNDERSTANDING PERSON makes you want to PRAISE GOD!

1. “Thank You LORD for giving me SO-AND-SO as a FRIEND”

Colossians 3:12-16

Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.

14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.

15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

K. Notice also here in V 13, that James says that:

1. this ‘GOOD CONDUCT’ or ‘GOOD CONVERSATION’ reveals that:

13c “His works are done in the MEEKNESS of WISDOM”

‘MEEKNESS’

“Expresses not in a man’s outward behavior only, nor in his relations to his fellow man, or his mere natural disposition, but expressed rather as an inwrought grace of the soul, first and chiefly directed toward God.”

A. this is what James described back in 1:27

James 1:27

27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

B. I LOVE this definition of MEEKNESS:

“The attitude  of spirit in which we accept God’s dealing with us as good and do not dispute or resist.”

CONCLUSION:

* CHRIST is the ULTIMATE example of MEEKNESS;

* And describing this GODLY MEEKNESS, Paul wrote in -

Philippians 2:1-11

Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. (only way to esteem others better than ourselves is through MEEKNESS)

4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. (Meekness) 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, (meekness) 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. (ultimate meekness)

9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,

11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

“Watch Your Mouth”

James 3:1-12

B. The 1st 12 verses of chapter 3 deal with the tongue

1. Just as an old-fashioned DR. examined a patient’s tongue to assist in diagnosis;

2. So James tests a person’s spiritual health by his or her conversation

“Self-diagnosis begins with sins of speech”

C. Somebody once said:

“Watch your tongue. It’s in a wet place where it’s easy to slip!”

1 My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.

A. James begins with a warning against the hasty desire –

1. To be a teacher of the Word of God

B. Although the tongue is not specifically mentioned;

1. The UNDERLYING thought is that one who uses the tongue in teaching the Scriptures

2. Assumes added responsibility before God and man

“Do not become unduly ambitious to be a teacher.”

C. This is NOT a PROHIBITION against the use of the gift of teaching

1. To those who have been called to teach God’s Word

2. What James is warning about is that

“Those who teach the Word of God will receive the heavier judgment if they fail to practice what they teach.”

D. It is a HUGE responsibility to TEACH God’s Word

1. The teacher must be prepared to OBEY what he sees in the Word

E. Somebody once said:

“A Pastor can never hope to lead others beyond what he himself has practiced. The extent of his influence on others will be determined by how much he himself has progressed.”

F. Do you realize that the teacher begets others in his OWN IMAGE;

1. He makes them like himself

G. If he DILUTES or EXPLAINS AWAY the meaning of SCRIPTURE;

1. He stunts the growth of those who follow him

H. If a Bible Teacher CONDONES SIN in ANY FORM;

1. He fosters lives of UNGODLINESS

I. Do you realize that one of the reasons that PEOPLE HATE the BIBLE is because:

“The Bible calls for TOTAL COMMITMENT to Jesus Christ.”

“The Word of God requires that Christ must be Lord of every area of the believer’s life.”

J. So it’s a HUGE RESPONSIBILITY to be a TEACHER / PREACHER of the Word!

1. And here, James says:

“Do not become unduly ambitious to be a teacher.”

K. James now moves from the specific ministry of TEACHING to the

1. GENERAL area of CONVERSATION

2 For we all stumble in many things (we do too, don’t we?!). If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect (complete/mature) man, able also to bridle the whole body.

A. We are all prone to stumble in MANY AREAS;

1. But if ANYONE can CONTROL his tongue

2. So that he does not commit the various SINS of SPEECH…

a. That person is truly well-rounded and complete

“If a person can exercise control over their speech, they should have no difficulty in practicing self-control in other areas of life as well.”

B. Jesus said “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.”

1. If you want to know what’s in someone’s HEART;

a. Then LISTEN to what’s coming out of their MOUTH

Matthew 15:1-20 (NKJV)

1 Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,

2 “Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.” 3 He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ 5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”– 6 then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. 7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: 8 ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ” 10 When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear and understand: 11 Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.” 12 Then His disciples came and said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?” 13 But He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.

14 Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.” 15 Then Peter answered and said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.” 16 So Jesus said, “Are you also still without understanding? 17 Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? 18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.

20 These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”

C. And James here says:

2 For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.

A. And then, beginning in verse 3, James gives 5 visual illustrations of the tongue

1st of all, James compares the tongue to a BRIDLE -

3 Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body.

A. We live in Wyoming, so we all know that a BRIDLE is the HARNESS that –

1. Goes over the horses head

2. And it HOLDS the BITS in the horses’ mouths

B. Connected to the BIT are the REINS

1. And though the BIT is a VERY SMALL piece of STEEL

2. Yet even a SMALL CHILD can control a LARGE HORSE w/ a small bit

“So the TONGUE, like a horses’ bit can DIRECT the LIFE…either for GOOD or for EVIL.”

C. The 2nd illustration James’ gives is that of a RUDDER-

4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires.

A. Compared with the SHIP itself;

1. The RUDDER is a VERY SMALL member

2. It weighs only a FRACTION of the weight of the SHIP

B. For example,

1. The QUEEN ELIZABETH weighed 83,673 gross tons

2. The RUDDER weighed only 140 tons

3. Less than 2/10 of 1 %

C. To give you a better understanding of what 2/10 of 1% looks like;

1. It is the equivalent of 8 people out of 4000 in Buffalo

a. 8 people = the RUDDER

b. 4000 people = the Queen Elizabeth

D. If you had 8 people CONTROLLING BUFFALO the direction of Buffalo

1. That would be the equivalent of the rudder on the Queen Elizabeth

E. So you can see how SMALL a RUDDER needs to be in order to control a large ship

1. Just because the TONGUE is SMALL, we must not misjudge its POWER

“Though it is a very small member of the body, and relatively hidden, yet it can boast of great accomplishments, both good and evil.”

F. A 3RD illustration James uses is that of a FIRE

5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!

A. It only takes 1 little match to light a GREAT FIRE!

1. Many terrible forest fires have begun with ONE MATCH

B. A match can be used to:

1. Light a GRILL for a BBQ

2. Light a LOG in your fireplace to warm your home

3. Or light a LANTERN to see your way when you are CAMPING

C. But a MATCH can also be used to DESTROY

1. Burn down a building

2. Forest fire

3. many other uses

“The tongue is like a small lighted match. Its potential for wickedness is almost infinite.”

D. Notice what else James says about this fire –

6a  And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity.

A. Wow! That’s quite a WARNING!

1. And EVERY ONE of us has a TONGUE!

B. JUST THINK ABOUT IT:

1. NOBODY had to TAKE AN EXAM, or PASS a test to GET A TONGUE;

2. Everyone has one

3. And behind it can be a WORLD of INIQUITY!

C. The word ‘WORLD’ here speaks of its VASTNESS

The tongue, though small has a WORLD of POSSIBILITIES of INIQUITY in it!

The possible DESTRUCTION that a person can do with their TONGUE is unlimited!

D. I don’t think most people realize how POWERFUL their TONGUE is

“The tongue is a fire, a WORLD of INIQUITY”

Illustration of this vast truth:

Two women in Brooklyn were engaged in conversation…

One said: “Tillie told me that you told her that secret I told you not to tell her.”

The other replied: “She’s a mean thing! I told Tillie not to tell you I told her.”

The 1st speaker responded: “Well, I told Tillie I wouldn’t tell you she told me-so don’t tell her I did!”

E. When I picture a FOREST FIRE;

1. I think of SOMETHING that STARTED OUT SMALL

2. But then GREW into a RAGING, OUT-OF-CONTROL fire

G. Much like GOSSIP/ SLANDER/ CRITICISM

1. You may not be desiring to DESTROY someone

2. But the TONGUE destroys MANY LIVES

6a  And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity…6b The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

A. The tongue can defile the WHOLE BODY

A person can corrupt his whole personality by using his tongue to SLANDER, ABUSE, LIE, BLASPHEME and SWEAR

Clovis G. Chappel (Sermons from the Psalms)

The faultfinder injures himself…The mud slinger cannot engage in his favorite pastime without getting some of the mud that he slings both upon his hands and upon his heart. How often we have come away from such an experience with a sense of defilement! Yet that was not our intention at all. We were vainly hoping that by slinging mud upon others we might enhance someone’s estimate of our own cleanliness. We were foolish enough to believe that we could build ourselves up by tearing another down. We were blind enough to imagine that by putting a stick of dynamite under the house of our neighbor we could strengthen the foundations of our own. Bu this is never the case. In our efforts to injure others we may succeed, but we always inflict the deeper injury upon ourselves.”

B. Notice what else James says here in Verse 6:

The tongue ‘SETS ON FIRE THE COURSE (wheel) of NATURE”

A. This ‘WHEEL’ was set in motion at BIRTH

1. The idea of a WHEEL is that it is ROUND

2. The FIRE the TONGUE starts ENCOMPASSES the ENTIRE LIFE

An evil tongue pollutes not only a man’s personal life, but it contaminates all his activities as well!

“An EVIL TONGUE affects the WHOLE of wickedness in the whole of man for the whole of life.”

B. Notice what else James says here in Verse 6-

‘a wicked tongue is set on fire by hell’

C. Isn’t that something?

ALL evil speech has its source there.

Evil speech is HELLISH in its character

The word for ‘HELL’ that James uses here is only used by Christ in the N.T.

The Word HELL here is the word GEHENNA

‘Gehenna or hell, is the place or state of the lost and condemned’

The TONGUE is ‘SET ON FIRE’ by Gehenna, the place of the LOST & CONDEMNED

D. It is a SERIOUS THING to SLANDER, GOSSIP or seek to harm someone w/ your tongue.

1. The motivation or source of power comes from the place of the eternally damned

E. WOW!

1. It’ll make you think the next time you are TEMPTED to HARM someone w/ your speech

F. The 4TH figure James compares the tongue to is like a WILD, untamable creature

7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind.

A. Man can TAME and TRAIN nearly every kind of land and sea creature…BUT…

8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

A. Because of the FALL of MAN in SIN;

1. Man has LOST dominion over this SMALL piece of FLESH

B. We can train animals;

1. Yet we CAN’T TRAIN our own TONGUES

Human nature does not have the ability or strength to govern this little member… ONLY GOD HAS THE POWER TO BRING IT UNDER CONTROL!

C. somebody had once made an interesting observation:

“At the tower of babble, God confused the languages, because the tongue though small in size is filled with a world of iniquity. But with the GIFT OF TONGUES, God demonstrates that He has once again taken control of a man’s tongue & the 1st time a man speaks with the gift of tongues, it is the inaugural speech declaring that God has once again dominion over his tongue.”

D. Notice James also characterizes the tongue as:

“an UNRULY EVIL, full of deadly poison!”

Like a drop or two of venom from a deadly serpent, the TONGUE can poison MINDS and ASSASSINATE CHARACTERS!

William McDonald

“We all know how easy it is to gossip about others. How often we have engaged in mudslinging in order to get even for supposed wrongs. And often for no reason at all we have belittled others, criticized them, downgraded them. Who can measure the harm done, the tears that have flowed, the broken hearts, the ruined reputations? And who can measure the misery it has brought to our own lives and to our families? The inward bitterness that has been aroused, the shame of having to apologize, the bad effects on our health. Parents who have openly indulged in criticism of fellow-believers have had to watch their children adopt the same critical spirit and wander off from the Christian fellowship. The price we have to pay for the undisciplined use of our tongue is enormous.”

E. Pretty SAD ISN’T IT?!

1. I know that we are ALL GUILTY of TALKING about others!!!!

9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.

A. It is INCONSISTENT to use the tongue for both GOOD and EVIL purposes

1. It is completely UNNATURAL

2. There is nothing like it in nature

One minute a man BLESSES GOD; and the NEXT minute he CURSES those who are MADE IN THE IMAGE of GOD!

The tongue that blesses God should help men instead of harm them

All that we say, should be subjected to this 3 fold test:

#1. Is it TRUE?

#2. Is it KIND?

#3. Is it NECESSARY?

B. We need to constantly ask the LORD to WATCH over our lips

1. And PRAY that the WORDS of our MOUTHS

2. And the MEDITATION of our HEARTS be ACCEPTABLE in his SIGHT!

Romans 12:1 (NKJV)
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. (including our tongues)

11 Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? 12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.

A. In nature;

1. A fruit tree produces only ONE KIND of FRUIT

B. FIG trees produce FIGS

1. GRAPEVINES produce GRAPES

2. OLIVES – olives

C. No SPRING can yield SALT WATER and FRESH water at the same time

1. It must be ONE or the OTHER

CONCLUSION:

A. So what’s the REMEDY to our TONGUES?

a. Let me give you 7 cures to a TONGUE ON FIRE:

#1. Pray daily that God will keep us from GOSSIP, SLANDER and un-kind speech

#2. Don’t speak unfavorably about ANYONE (we’re all made in God’s image!)

#3. Let LOVE cover a MULTITUDE of sins

#4. Go to the person you have a PROBLEM with, not to others

#5. Try to see Christ in our brethren, not magnifying minor faults

#6. If recognize that we have begun to say something that is harmful, end stmt immediately

#7. If someone is gossiping to you, rebuke them, refuse to participate, walk away

“How great a fire this little member can cause!”

Want to know what’s in someone’s heart? Listen to their speech

Want to know what’s in YOUR heart? Listen to what’s coming out of your mouth

1. James put us all on trial this morning

2. Before we end, let me ask you these questions:

Do you criticize others behind their backs?

Is my speech consistently clean, edifying, kind?

Do I use ‘minced oaths’ such as ‘gosh; golly; gee; jeepers; good heavens; heck’?

When I retell a story, do I exaggerate in order to impress others?

To I habitually tell the truth, even if it means loss of friends; finances; status?

When I talk about the Bible, do I tell others to do things I don’t do myself?
